DragonBall: Episode 008
(Originally aired 16 April 1986)

亀仙人のカメハメ波
"Kamesennin no Kamehameha"
("Kame-Sen'nin's Kamehameha")

Chapter 013 begins:
"Kamesennin no Bashousen" / "Kame-Sen'nin's Bashousen"

Canon Segment: 20 minutes, 29 seconds

The kids soon arrive at Kame House where Goku and the old man greet each other, while Chi-Chi wonders if this is really Muten-Roshi. Goku and Kame-Sen'nin discuss Kinto-Un (which the old man says he received from Kami himself!), until Kame-Sen'nin notices that the girl, and her breasts, have shrunk. Goku explains that this one is Gyû-maô's daughter, Chi-Chi. While Kame-Sen'nin ponders her name, Chi-Chi tells Goku she wants to test if he is the real Muten-Roshi. She then takes off her helmet's blade and throws it, thinking the real one would be able to avoid it. Kame-Sen'nin quickly turns around and holds out his staff... only to have the blade chop off the tip of his staff and land in his head. Chi-Chi decides that he isn't Muten-Roshi after all, which Kame-Sen'nin refutes by showing her his driver's license.

With a band-aid on his head and his staff taped back together, Kame-Sen'nin begins to recall the powers of the Bashousen; one wave causes strong winds, two waves summons storm clouds, and three waves sheds heavy rain. He does possess it, but wants to know what they need it for. Chi-Chi frantically begs to borrow it to put out the fires on Mount Frypan. The old man knows of this fire, and that the Bashousen could surely put it out. He considers it for a bit, and then calls Goku over to the side to discuss his "conditions" for lending it out: He wants to poke at the breasts of that older girl from before. Umigame vehemently protests such a request. The old man says he simply wants a "souvenir for the underworld". The turtle tries to remind him that he drank an immortality potion, but Kame-Sen'nin brushes that fact aside. Goku figures it would be no big deal for the old man to poke Bulma's chest. Kame-Sen'nin then tells him that they need to keep it a secret from Chi-Chi, since Gyû-maô would not be cool with it.

After searching Kame House up and down, Kame-Sen'nin asks his turtle if he knows where the Bashousen is. Umigame reminds him that he used it as a pot holder a long time ago, which prompts Kame-Sen'nin to recall throwing it out after spilling wonton soup on it! Chi-Chi cries, while Goku worries about the Dragon Ball. However, Kame-Sen'nin suddenly declares that he will personally go to Mount Frypan and put out the fire. He changes his clothes and prepares to set out, which prompts Goku to ask how he will get there, since he cannot ride on Kinto-Un. The old man shows how by calling for Kogamera! The kids then set off on the cloud, while Kame-Sen'nin follows behind on his spinning turtle.

Gyû-maô is unhappy to hear that they did not get the Bashousen... until he sees that his master has come to put out the fire personally! Gyû-maô quickly runs over to greet him, while everyone else wonders if the dizzy Kame-Sen'nin will be okay.

Chapter 014 begins:
"Kamesennin no Kamehameha!!" / "Kame-Sen'nin's Kamehameha!!"

Kame-Sen'nin looks over the fire, and then calls out Gyû-maô, bringing up his bad reputation. Gyû-maô humbles himself and apologizes, promising to be good and get rid of his treasure if only his teacher would put out the fire. Kame-Sen'nin tells him he does not have to go so far as throwing out his treasure, and is disappointed Gyû-maô could not put out the fire himself. He then reminds Goku of the conditions, so the two of them go off to the side with Bulma. Goku tells her the old man wants to poke her chest, or else he will not put out the fire. Bulma refuses, until Kame-Sen'nin lets her know that he knows she needs the "Whatever Ball". She reluctantly agrees, but not until after he puts out the fire. The two of them pinky swear on it.

Kame-Sen'nin is now ready to put out the fire. He takes off his shirt, and, with help from Goku, climbs atop a ledge. He prepares himself, and then suddenly bulks up to a much more impressive size. Gyû-maô says that he is going to use Kamehameha. Pu'er asks about the Kamehameha, which is a technique Yamcha has heard of, but has never seen. Kame-Sen'nin motions his hands, slowly calls out "Ka-me-ha-me-ha!", and the blasts fires from his hands towards the mountain. Kame-Sen'nin then returns to his frailer form. It turns out that not only did he put out the fire, but also has destroyed the mountain and the castle!

Chapter 015 begins:
"Chiishinchuu Hakken" / "Qi Xing Qiu Found"

Oolong thinks they will never find the Dragon Ball in all this rubble. Bulma and her Dragon Radar disagree. She says it is 50 to the southwest. Meanwhile, Kame-Sen'nin apologizes for destroying the castle. Goku asks the old man to teach him that awesome technique, but Kame-Sen'nin informs him that it takes fifty years of training to master. While Gyû-maô and Kame-Sen'nin discuss other things, Goku begins mimicking the hand motions, and suddenly lauches a Kamehameha at the car! He thinks it was not as great as Kame-Sen'nin Grandpa's, though Gyû-maô thinks that's to be expected of Gohan's grandson.

Kame-Sen'nin had not known the boy was Gohan's grandson until now, but suddenly recalls hearing about him taking in a child with a tail. He asks Goku how old Gohan is doing, to which Goku bluntly replies that he is dead. Kame-Sen'nin then offers to let Goku stay at his house and train. Excited about the offer, Goku says he will come right away, once they find all the Dragon Balls. Yamcha is quite shocked that Goku will be able to study under Muten-Roshi, making Pu'er think they should just give up on stealing their Dragon Balls. Yamcha says they know the boy's weak point, and they can still pursue them without a tracking device (which was destroyed with the car).

Just then, Bulma finds the Qi Xing Qiu in all the rubble. Her excitement fades once she notices their car is now wrecked. Gyû-maô then comes to the rescue by giving them his car. While the three of them hop in and check it out, Bulma checks the Radar to find that the final Dragon Ball is far off to the west. They prepare to drive off, until Kame-Sen'nin reminds her she cannot leave just yet. She pulls Oolong off to the side, and demands that he take her place for this, or else... "Bulma" then calls Kame-Sen'nin over to her, where she encourages him to do a lot more than poke. When they are done, Kame-Sen'nin is quite pleased, while the real Bulma is furious with Oolong.

Back at the car, Chi-Chi tells Goku that when they are older, she will give herself to him as a bride. Goku does not understand, but thinks that if she is giving him something, he will come to get it. The gang is (really) ready to leave now, so they say their goodbyes and drive off. Yamcha and Pu'er quickly prepare to follow, though they have to use a newer model car to keep up. Bulma tells Goku there is only one Dragon Ball left, so he gets excited about seeing the dragon.

THIS AND THAT:

ALTERED SCENE:

When Kame-Sen'nin tells Goku that he should be the one to inform Bulma of his conditions, it happens at different points in the anime and manga.

While in the anime Kame-Sen'nin gracefully jumps off of Kogamera when he arrives at Mount Frypan (and falls over dizzy when Gyû-maô excitedly greets him), in the manga, Kogamera instead lands on the ground, and Kame-Sen'nin slowly steps off of it and vomits, while mumbling about being dizzy.

MISSING SCENE:

Before Kame-Sen'nin begins to explain the Bashousen in the anime, some dialogue from the manga is nonexistent. He had asked what the kids had come to see him for, so Goku suddenly remembers and asks him about the Bashousen.

Another instance of nonexistent dialogue from the manga: Before Kame-Sen'nin pulls Goku aside to discuss his "conditions", there was some more begging from Chi-Chi, followed by Kame-Sen'nin actually agreeing to lend it to them. After that, Chi-Chi graciously thanks him, until Kame-Sen'nin says he has conditions, which leads into him pulling Goku off to the side. One line from these panels by Goku remains in the anime, though: "Nani nayande'ru n'da." ("What're you worried about?"). Presumably, this is meant to bridge the gap between Kame-Sen'nin admitting that the Bashousen could douse the fire, and then pulling Goku aside.

On a related note to the last removal, since the actual agreement to lend it was not present in the anime, once his discussion with Kame-Sen'nin ends, Goku tells Chi-Chi (in the anime) that they can borrow it, and she cheers. But that addition replaces a few panels of manga: Kame-Sen'nin declares that he is off to go get the Bashousen, Goku thinks the old man is weird for wanting to poke, Chi-Chi wants to know about those "conditions", which Kame-Sen'nin brushes off as he heads inside.

MISCELLANEOUS:

Most of the pre-title screen segment is actually a repeat of the dialogue and events at the end of both Episode 007 and Chapter 012. Though, it is obviously not a flashback or recap, and the animation is quite different.

The search for the Dragon Ball in the rubble is extended in the anime, which seems almost ironic considering the title for the corresponding manga chapter!
