DragonBall: Episode 007
(Originally aired 9 April 1986)

フライパン山の牛魔王
"Furaipan Yama no Gyû-maô"
("Gyû-maô of Mount Frypan")

Chapter 011 begins:
"Furaipan Yama no Gyû-maô" / "Gyû-maô of Mount Frypan"

Canon Segment: 1 minutes, 23 seconds

Two days have passed since their encounters with Yamcha, and the gang has nearly arrived at Mount Frypan. Bulma wonders why it is so hot when they are heading north.

This prompts Oolong to explain that originally this was a cool area, but ten years ago, a fire spirit came down from the heavens and turned Mount Frypan into a burning mountain.

Filler Segment: 2 minute, 1 seconds

Mai and Shuu, having failed again, trek towards Pilaf's castle to tell him the bad news. The two of them daydream about what it would be like if Pilaf were nice to them, though they know it would never come true, and he would probably just have them struck by lightning. Inside the castle, when they report their failure, Pilaf tells them exactly what they daydreamed of... but spoils it by shouting that he would never say anything like that. Pilaf then presses a button that causes mechanical arms to grab the two of them and hold them in place. The roof of the castle opens up, and a dark cloud flies above it, striking them with lightning after all. Pilaf points his fork at them to tell them that is what they get, only to have a bolt of lightning zap him through the fork.

Canon Segment: 6 minutes, 40 seconds

At that point, they finally reach Mount Frypan, which is covered in flames. Bulma and Goku stare in awe at the mountain, while Oolong suggests they leave since Gyû-maô is also here. Bulma wants to know who this Gyû-maô is, so Oolong explains that he is quite fearsome, and they are sure to die if they go on. Gyû-maô also has a castle full of treasures at the peak, so he carefully guards this area. Bulma figures the sixth Dragon Ball must be inside. Gyû-maô himself is not, however, because the mountain was set ablaze while he was on a picnic with his child, so he cannot return to his own castle. Oolong says this is why they have to leave, but Bulma refuses. Oolong then attempts to drive away, so Bulma calls out "Pee Pee" to stop him. Finally, Oolong gives in.

Yamcha and Pu'er realize they must be going to Mount Frypan, which means dealing with Gyû-maô. Pu'er thinks they would stand no chance between him and the fire, but Yamcha is interested in seeing Goku confront Gyû-maô. Their conversation is suddenly interrupted by the scream of a girl who is being chased by a dinosaur. She takes the blade off of her helmet and tosses it at the dinosaur such that it decapitates him. The sight of the dinosaur's remains scares her, so she next uses her helmet laser to blow it up. The girl continues running off crying until she bumps into the shocked Yamcha. She gets scared and tries to zap him too, but Yamcha evades the beam and knocks her out. Now, he and Pu'er will head to Mount Frypan, too.

While searching through ruins of a village at the foot of the mountain, Bulma checks the Radar and realizes the Dragon Ball is definitely inside the castle. She tells Goku to head up there and look for it, so he calls for Kinto-Un and flies above the flames. When trying to fly down into the castle, though, the heat turns out to be too much for him. Bulma complains that he gave up too easily. Suddenly, an axe flies into the wall beside her. It is Gyû-maô, who wants to know if they are here to steal his treasure. Frightened, the two of them deny it, but Goku returns and blabbers that he could not get into the castle.

Filler Segment: 44 seconds

Gyû-maô realizes they are thieves, and he begins swinging his axe at Goku. Goku avoids all of his swings as Bulma cheers him on, but Goku finds his kick to be ineffective.

As a result, Goku calls for Kinto-Un and flies circles around Gyû-maô's head attempting to hit him again, but that is also ineffective. Oolong tells Goku he should just give up, as he stands no chance against Gyû-maô.

Canon Segment: 9 minutes, 33 seconds

Goku is surprised to find out that this guy was Gyû-maô, and is quite impressed with his strength. Upon seeing Kinto-Un, Gyû-maô wants to know where he got it from.

Goku responds that old man Kame-Sen'nin gave it to him. Gyû-maô excitedly says that Kame-Sen'nin is Muten-Roshi, and asks Goku if he knows where Muten-Roshi lives.

Chapter 012 begins:
"Kamesennin o Tazunete" / "Asking Kame-Sen'nin"

Bulma thinks Kame-Sen'nin probably lives off the coast of that beach they met him on. Gyû-maô bursts into dance, excited about the fact that he'll be able to return to his castle. He then spots the Nyoibou on Goku's back, so Goku explains that he got it from his grandpa. Gyû-maô is quite surprised to meet Gohan's grandson, while Goku is similarly surprised that he knows his grandpa. Yamcha notes that the boy has befriended him. Gyû-maô then begins to explain that he was Muten-Roshi's #2 pupil, while Gohan was the #1 pupil.

More importantly than all the reminiscing, Gyû-maô has a request. He explains that Muten-Roshi has the Bashôsen in his possession, which can be used to rid the mountain of its flames. He wants Goku to use his cloud to go borrow the Bashôsen. Goku agrees, though asks for the Dragon Ball here in return. Gyû-maô agrees, but adds that he would like Goku to pick up his daughter Chi-Chi along the way, since she was also on her way to see Muten-Roshi. Gyû-maô shows Goku a picture of her, saying he could even have her as a bride. Yamcha recognizes this girl as the one he knocked out earlier. Goku then sets off, while Yamcha also rushes off to tend to Chi-Chi.

Yamcha finds her still lying on the ground, so he wakes her up. When she comes to, she prepares to blast him with her helmet laser, until he asks her to wait, addressing her by name. He apologizes to her, and claims that he loves her. As Chi-Chi blushes and thinks of the romantic things she reads in the newspapers, Yamcha spots Goku approaching, so he quickly hides out of sight. Chi-Chi assumes he must be embarrassed.

Goku then swoops down, calling out to ask if she is Chi-Chi. She decides that since this one knows her name too, he must also love her. Goku simply explains that he knows her father and he is off to retrieve the Bashôsen, and that she should come with him. He also tells her that she must have a clean heart to ride on Kinto-Un, so she responds that her heart is as clean as a flush toilet! Using Goku's tail as leverage, Chi-Chi then pulls herself up onto the cloud, while Goku falls over in pain. He explains to her that grabbing his tail makes him weak, which Yamcha gleefully overhears in the bushes nearby.

Pu'er then asks Yamcha what they will do now, so he explains that they will wait until the sixth Ball is gathered, follow them to the seventh, and when they have all seven, he will take them all using Rôgafûfûken. Pu'er thinks they should visit a dentist while they wait, but Yamcha hates dentists, and curses Goku. Meanwhile, as they ride through the air on Kinto-Un, Goku decides to pat-pat Chi-Chi with his foot. He declares that she is a girl, so she screams and knocks him off the cloud, while crashing into a mountain herself soon after. As they recover and continue on their way, Chi-Chi thinks to herself that, after being kicked "there", she must become his bride. The two of them soon reach the ocean, where a friendly dolphin directs them to Kame-Sen'nin's island. They then arrive at his house, where Goku and the old man greet each other, while Chi-Chi wonders if this is really Muten-Roshi.

THIS AND THAT:

ALTERED SCENE:

There is a fairly significant change in dialogue when Pu'er and Yamcha discuss the fact that the three are headed to Mount Frypan. In the manga, after Pu'er suggests that they just give up and go home, Yamcha responds that he thinks the boy may be able to befriend Gyû-maô, since Son Gohan and Gyû-maô were both pupils of Muten-Roshi. In the anime, Yamcha instead delights at the idea of Gyû-maô beating up Goku because of what Goku did to his teeth.

As a side effect of the previous change, Yamcha's reaction to Goku and Gyû-maô getting along differs between versions. In the manga, he merely notes to Pu'er that Goku befriended Gyû-maô after all, while in the anime, he is instead shocked (and disappointed) that the two of them are getting along.

MISSING SCENE:

MISCELLANEOUS:

Yamcha's appearance just before the title screen is not present in the manga, and the dialogue just before that regarding sunset is also filler.

Goku does not go into a lake to cool himself off in the manga.
