DragonBall: Episode 001
(Originally aired 26 February 1986)

ブルマと孫悟空
"Buruma to Son Gokû"
("Bulma and Son Goku")

Chapter 001 begins:
"Buruma to Son Gokû" / "Bulma and Son Goku"

Canon Segment: 3 minutes, 25 seconds

The episode begins with an introduction to this mountain wilderness, and the boy that lives here: Goku. Greeting some monkeys along the way, Goku heads home, riding on a log he had just chopped down. When he arrives at the small house, he uses his fighting prowess to shatter the log into many smaller blocks of wood. After he is finished chopping wood, Goku realizes that he is hungry, so he goes inside to fetch his , and tell Grandpa that he's going out. Meanwhile, Bulma gets out of her car, and checks her Dragon Radar, noting that the ball should be a bit more to the west.

Filler Segment: 1 minute, 11 seconds

As Goku hops through the woods, he stumbles upon an apple tree. When he finishes an apple, he tosses the core aside, where it lands on the head of a mountain lion. The lion gets angry and begins to chase him.

Goku is not the least bit scared, and manages to trick the lion into running himself off of a cliff. Goku soon falls into the water below, too, after the branch he is hanging from snaps.

Canon Segment: 6 minutes, 56 seconds

Goku climbs out of the water, and dunks his tail into the water to use as bait. A big fish spots it, and Goku takes the opportunity to beat the fish up, and drag it home for dinner. As he walks down the road, Bulma's car suddenly comes racing down, and is unable to stop before hitting him. Goku assumes the car to be a monster that wants his fish, and attacks it. He also mistakes Bulma for a goblin that was inside the monster. Bulma then pulls out her pistol and begins shooting at this boy who has beaten up her car, but the bullets do not affect him.

Before Goku can do any more harm, Bulma calls out that she is not a goblin, but rather a human. Goku is suspicious, and begins to inspect her. He concludes that she is somehow different from him, so she explains that it is because of their gender difference. Not only has Goku never seen a woman before, but he has never seen any other humans besides his Grandpa. Goku also concludes that women do not have tails, and then inquires about her monster. She explains that it is a car, and that she comes from the city, far off to the west.

Goku invites her to his house so that he can feed her, since Grandpa said to be nice to girls. She decides to accept, thinking that his power might be useful. When they arrive, Goku explains to Grandpa that he has brought a girl here, and Bulma realizes that it is the Dragon Ball. However, Goku will not let her take Grandpa's memento. As such, she pulls out the two Dragon Balls she has, which Goku points out as being two Grandpas. Bulma begins to explain that these things are called Dragon Balls.

Filler Segment: 1 minute, 24 seconds

Meanwhile, Pilaf and his gang stumble upon the Yi Xing Qiu [One-Star Ball].

Before he can get too excited, Mai explains that you need all seven Dragon Balls to summon Shenlong and have your wish granted.

Pilaf declares that he will find all seven, then, to fulfill his wish to take over the world.

Canon Segment: 7 minutes, 31 seconds

Goku thinks these Dragon Ball things sound amazing, and Bulma explains that she wants to use them to wish for a great boyfriend. Goku still will not hand over the Si Xing Qiu. Bulma then decides to try bribing him by letting him feel her butt, but Goku responds that he has no interest in touching a filthy ass. She instead decides to insist that he come along on her journey to find the Dragon Balls, as she reminds him of what Grandpa said about being nice to girls. Goku decides he will come, so long as he can hold onto his Dragon Ball.

Goku wonders how they will even find these things, so Bulma shows him the Dragon Radar she invented that detects their locations. She then pulls out a capsule for a new vehicle to travel to the next ball with: a motorcycle. Goku is suspicious of this capsule technology, but is nonetheless impressed by the bike's speed. The two of them ride down the road for a while, until Bulma pulls over to go pee.

Before she gets a chance to, however, a mean pterodactyl grabs her. Goku runs over to them, wondering if Bulma and the pterodactyl are acquaintances. The pterodactyl ties Goku to a tree and says to wait for them here, as he flies off with Bulma. Goku asks how long he should wait, until Bulma yells at him to help her before she gets eaten. Goku nonchalantly unties himself with his tail, and wonders how he will get into the air to help him. He then remembers the motorcycle, and hops on and fiddles with it until the engine starts. He uses a hill to gain some altitude, and then extends his Nyoibô to whack the pterodactyl on the head, making him fall towards the ground and release his grip on Bulma. Goku tosses his such that it catches her by the sleeves and hangs her safely from a cliffside, where she can no longer hold it in...

THIS AND THAT:

ALTERED SCENE:

In the manga, Bulma's first appearance (getting out of her car to check the radar) happens after Goku initially leaves his house in search of food, while in the anime, she does this before he leaves.

Goku does not fall into the river in the manga. Rather, he gracefully hops down the cliff and lands on the river bank.

In the manga, there is not much of an impact between Goku/the fish and Bulma's car. In turn, there is no dialogue relating to her being surprised to see him survive.

Bulma is the one that explains the lore behind the Dragon Balls in the manga, as Pilaf, Mai, and Shuu do not even debut for a few more chapters.

In the anime, Goku and Bulma introduce themselves while walking down the road to his house. But in the manga, this happens as they are leaving his house, after she shows him the Dragon Radar.

The pterodactyl's corpse doesn't fall down the cliff in the manga, instead landing on some grass behind Goku.

MISCELLANEOUS:
The little segments with the glowing Si Xing Qiu, and Goku thinking Grandpa is communicating something, do not appear in the manga.
