25 February 2008
VegettoEX @ 6:22 pm EDT -- Episode #0117 of the podcast is available for download! Sorry that we're a date late in posting it; I'm not actually sure whose fault it is :P. This week we checked out an amazing project that's just recently been completed:
That's right, one of the official DragonBall "side stories", In The Name Of Piccolo-Daimaô, has been obtained, scanned, and fully translated! The above link will take you to the website of desirecampbell, one of our forum regulars, who helped in the project. Read along and listen in for our thoughts. Definitely check it out.
One thing we mentioned in the podcast episode that hasn't been mentioned here on the home page was the interview with Ian Corlett (the original voice of adult Goku in North America) on Voiceprint, a podcast run by a guy named Trevor Devall. It's worth listening to, even if the Goku-centric content is somewhat minimal compared to other areas of interest (but that content is certainly good to hear).
In other news, it looks like IGN just popped up a review of the recent re-release of the three DragonBall movies (2, 3, & 4) that FUNimation has the rights to the home releases of. Confused? Just check out the respective "DVD Guide" page. |

VegettoEX @ 10:00 pm EDT -- Super Ghost Kamikaze from our forum wrote in and let us know that GameSpot put up a video from GDC (Game Developers Conference for those of you non-hardcore gamers), where Donny Clay from Atari is showing off the upcoming Burst Limit game. I definitely appreciate the acknowledgement of Dimps and Spike to a pretty spectacular degree, rather than the typical "we" dialogue (which, admittedly, is still in there a bit) completely ignoring that the games are actually developed in Japan. Also, "Kamehameha" is pronounced correctly, so the fanboy in me was happy :D.
Lots of gameplay footage of Goku vs Piccolo is shown off, along with confirmation that:
-
Both the English (FUNimation) and original Japanese cast are selectable (no word on the music)
-
There will be subtitles if you wish on the Japanese language track (accurate translations / non-dubtitles, we hope?)
-
The game covers the Saiya-jin arc to the end of Cell
-
There will be the so-called "in-game transformations"
-
Story elements are via in-game engine cut-scenes
-
Simultaneous release on the PS3 & Xbox 360 in July (kinda figured this one)
-
No plans for downloadable content
-
There will be achievements (also obvious)
-
No destructible environments
The video's just under 12 minutes long, and it's worth watching to see the game in-motion in a nice format like this. I'm trying not to get excited over games anymore, but this is looking pretty neat. |
20 February 2008
VegettoEX @ 10:00 pm EDT -- Futabatei Shimei let us know that Columbia has updated their site with the complete tracklisting for the upcoming 13-disc Chôzenshû CD collection. Lots of stuff on there, including pretty much everything from the Hit Song Collection series, the 2006 1/2 Special Remix CD, tons of live songs, and even Hironobu Kageyama's three English songs! We'll have a translation soon, and we'll go over it on the next podcast episode, too.

VegettoEX @ 6:30 pm EDT -- You've already read all over this (no doubt like the rest of fandom) over on Anime News Network, but let's pretend that maybe one of you hadn't heard some of this, thus making it a good update!
Surprising absolutely nobody, DragonBall remains one of Bandai's most-profitable franchises (even less of a surprise is seeing Gundam and Power Rangers right above it). Bandai is forecasting DB bringing them in a whopping ¥17.8 billion (that's around $167 million) for the 2008 fiscal year.
A new "Majin" race (that's a bit redundant, huh?) has been showcased for DragonBall online. Looking pretty neat!
There you go! |
17 February 2008
VegettoEX @ 9:26 pm EDT -- Word on the street from FUNimation's panel at Katsucon this weekend is that their recent release of both the Bardock & Trunks DBZ TV Specials as a single "double-feature" package release is coming to Blu-ray. All you PS3 owners that hadn't yet thought about picking it up, maybe hold off if you're still interested (keep in mind that it's the same cropped, faux-"remastered" style as their season boxsets).
VegettoEX @ 1:05 am EDT -- Episode #0116 of the podcast is available for download! We took it easy this week and gave some responses about doing stupid things with the characters and their names in response to a great e-mail. Oh, and don't mind us completely forgetting that FUNimation's faux-"remastered" DBZ season four and the Bardock/Trunks double-feature come out this week. Then again, no-one wrote in to remind us to mention it in the releases :P. Good times this show. Definitely check it out.

VegettoEX @ 8:12 pm EDT -- Doing anything? Of course you are. That's not stopping you from check out the chat and hanging out with all the cool kids.
We're in #daizenshuu over on irc.rizon.net. Need help getting in there? No problem; we've got a whole page to help you out. Stick around a bit if you don't see anyone chatting; sometimes it takes a while for us to wake up! Check you cats later with the next podcast episode. |

VegettoEX @ 12:38 pm EDT -- Tanooki Kuribo sent me an e-mail about this yesterday, but I totally forgot about it :P. Bandai has put out a press release talking about their 2008 plans and showcase from the 2008 American International Toy Fair. Here's the part you're all interested in:
DRAGON BALL Z® – Bandai America celebrates its triumphant return in 2008 as master toy licensee for Dragon Ball Z, considered one of the most successful anime properties from Japan for over the last 11 years. Fans of Goku, Gohan and all the Dragon Ball characters will have access to exclusive products in the Spring, including 4” collectible figures and highly detailed 2.5” figures direct from Japan. In the Fall, kids can build their ultimate Dragon Ball Z collection with exciting new toys designed for the U.S. market, like the 2.5” Flash Changer Figures that transforms characters into their energized forms, and 8” Power Boost Figures, with muscles that expand and break through the character’s energy force. The unique 6.5” Energy Battle Set offers figures that respond to one to another through IR technology, allowing kids to battle their characters and perform their final attack moves to defeat their opponent. Kids can also mimic Goku’s final attack with the brand’s first role-play set, the Kamehameha Wrist Bands.
Looks like toywiz.com has an image of one of the new figures, too:
Neat stuff. |

VegettoEX @ 6:58 pm EDT -- Fancy that... looks like the game actually will be coming out at some point! Popping up on YouTube and various other areas of this here intarweb is an actual promotional video / trailer for the upcoming MMORPG, DragonBall Online. Neato.
It showcases a little bit of when it's taking place via the opening page flips, some of the characters you can create, and even what appears to be some type of ability to... travel throughout time and interact with actual events from the DragonBall storyline...? Very interesting...
But that's not all. In addition to that, some actual gameplay footage has leaked online as well.
It's all in Korean (obviously), but that certainly doesn't change the fact that it's neat... |
12 February 2008
VegettoEX @ 6:55 am EDT -- It looks like Lantis has updated their website for the upcoming "Super Survivor" CD... "single"... which we know contains that song, the theme for the upcoming Burst Limit video game, and more. Well, here's the "more":
(01) "Super Survivor"
(02) "Kiseki no Honô yo Moegare!"
(03) "Super Survivor" (English Version)
(04) "Kiseki no Honô yo Moegare!" (English Version)
(05) Image Song
(06) Image Song
(07) Off Vocal
(08) Off Vocal
All right... first off, what the Hell does "English Version" mean? I'm going to take a guess and assume that it doesn't actually mean that Hironobu Kageyama has performed these songs with English lyrics; they're probably the versions of the songs (well, entirely different songs...) that appear in the American versions of the games. I could be entirely wrong (and I hope I am), but there you go.
You probably know that "Image Song" is what we could call a random song that appears on an album called something like "Music From And Inspired By (insert name here)". It's not actually from the show/game, but it's in the same style, etc. "Off Vocal", from what I understand, is just another phrase for "karaoke version".
So that about sums it up. I look forward to getting final information on the CD, which drops 09 April 2008 in Japan. |
10 February 2008
VegettoEX @ 12:50 am EDT -- Episode #0115 of the podcast is available for download! We're back on time for all you constantly-refreshing folks, out there ^_~. This week we all took at look at the state of the domestic anime industry as it pertains specifically to FUNimation and DragonBall as a franchise. Who is this company, where did they come from, and how did they manage to exploit one single series to allow themselves to become number one in the industry? Definitely check it out.

09 February 2008
VegettoEX @ 12:22 pm EDT -- Looks like David Smith over at IGN has written up yet another article talking about some of our favorite material (that being DragonBall), as well as its author (that being Toriyama). Smith does a pretty good job of explaining Toriyama's humor and pretty powerful penchant for puns (once I got going on the alliteration, I couldn't stop).
There's not a whole lot in there that visitors / readers / listeners of Daizenshuu EX wouldn't already be familiar with, but it's always encouraging to see some pretty intelligent writings on mainstream sites like IGN. Keep it up, Smith-d00d. You're giving us a good name as fans.
In other news, Game Trailers has a video review up for Budokai Tenkaichi 3 (otherwise known as Sparking! METEOR). Check it out... looks like they kinda liked it.
On the Viz front, it would appear that these "Viz Big" editions aren't necessarily going to be everything they're cracked up to be. A little discussion came up on our forum regarding the Rurouni Kenshin editions that just came out, and the seemingly non-color pages that begin chapter four. I double-checked my kanzenban for the series, and sure enough, it looks like Viz isn't doing all of the color pages for the books. Uh oh. |
08 February 2008
VegettoEX @ 7:06 am EDT -- Nothing too exciting going on in the Dragon World right now, but it's been a few days so I figured I'd drop a couple little bits of info.
As I'm sure everyone's read by now, Akira Toriyama is going to be teaming up with Masakazu Katsura (the creator of series such as Video Girl Ai more recently I"s... and also the contributor of the idea of fusion in DragonBall...!) for a special one-shot that will appear in the May issue of Jump Square in Japan. There is no indication one way or the other yet as to whether or not it will contain any DragonBall elements, but we're assuming it would be something entirely new. We'll definitely have Julian pick it up, give us some scans, etc.
Also, Anime on DVD have reviewed the upcoming Bardock / Trunks double feature DVD. The only reason this is significant or even remotely interesting is because they seem to have (at least temporarily) dropped their ban on reviewing FUNimation's faux-"remastered" products to review this one. Chris does indeed point out the technical flaws and incompetence with the presentation, but balances out the good aspects of the packaging and content, as well.
Finally, for some of you Australian/PAL video gamers, it looks like Budokai Tenkaichi 3 will finally be coming out next week on February 15th. Man, we've had Sparking! METEOR for what seems like eons, now, and even the American release has been out for quite a bit. If you're looking for our final thoughts on the game, check out Episode #0106 of the podcast.
Check you guys 'n gals later this weekend for the next episode of the podcast. |
03 February 2008
VegettoEX @ 3:55 pm EDT -- Episode #0114 of the podcast is available for download! Sorry about the slight delay; blame Comcast. Anyway, kinoko (our resident Tenshinhan fangirl) came down to record the episode with us, since the character's actually still relevant to the story for a little bit more. Lots of great discussions came up during our review, and I totally loved listening to it again. We also announced the winner of our 10th anniversary contest... did you win?! Definitely check it out.

VegettoEX @ 1:33 pm EDT -- I'm not doing very good on keeping up with the "Friday" portion of "From The Past Friday", am I? Oh, well...!
So here's a fun little doo-diddly you might have heard about either from actually being that old, or perhaps reading about it over in our "Rumor Guide". Well, I dug up the voice samples and they're even older than those FUNimation clips we've been sharing, so I guess that makes them pretty darn well from the past!
Back in 1999, we played a fun little prank saying that Saffron Henderson (the previous voice of Gohan from Ocean Studios when FUNimation was first dubbing DBZ) would be returning to play the role, rather than having it re-cast. This was, of course, absolutely false. But that didn't stop us from having a friend at the time (Matt / PyRo321) use his then-young voice to do some impressions and fool some people!
When you look back on it now, it's pretty hard to see how anyone would believe it. I guess it was still that magical time and we were all in denial as to what FUNimation was actually doing. It sure made for good times, though! We'll hit you back tomorrow with a podcast episode and contest winner! |
01 February 2008
VegettoEX @ 6:50 am EDT -- Tanooki Kuribo (you were expecting someone else?) wrote in to let us know that Toei's official site for DragonBall GT has been updated and is currently plugging the R2 releases for the TV series which begin this month. Good stuff! The cover art is indeed shown:
Also, we're once again re-confirming all the stuff that godofchaos told you way back when was indeed accurate, and here come all the catalogue listings. RightStuf has listed the following items coming out, all on May 27th:
- DBZ Movies 1 & 2 Blu-Ray (Remastered)
- DBZ Movies 1 & 2 Blu-Ray (Remastered)
- DBZ Season 5 boxset (Remastered)
- DBZ Spanish Vol. 7
- DBZ Spanish Vol. 8
Still waiting on more info about that DBGT "Season 1" boxset from FUNimation, but I'm sure we'll learn soon enough.
Anyone got any last-minute contest entries? Read below... |
