Detailed Synopsis

Out in space, a galaxy twirls and fizzles out. The narrator informs us that the Southern Galaxy has fallen under attack! Kaiô-sama, fearful beyond belief, states that at this rate, even his Northern Galaxy will be in extreme danger...

As the cherry blossoms fall, Goku and Chi-Chi make their way to a private school to have an interview concerning Gohan's possible enrollment. Chi-Chi continuously yells at Goku to be on his best behavior, and goes over a series of questions and answers ("My hobbies are reading and sports!"). In the park, a drunken Kame-Sen'nin amuses the group of friends with his wacky antics. At the school, however, Goku is amazed at the large number of people, and continues to be drilled by Chi-Chi on the answers (always coming back to food, though!).

In the park, again, Kuririn is now performing karaoke (terribly!); Kame-Sen'nin is the only one getting into the singing (with Vegeta getting ready to murder him over it!). Suddenly, a space ship lands... but Kuririn keeps right on singing. Gohan and the others rush forward to see a large number of warriors flooding from the ship. A tall man walks forward to "Prince Vegeta," introducing himself as Paragus. He, too, is a Saiyan!

Back at the school interview, Goku is contacted telepathically by Kaiô-sama, who tells him to come to his planet immediately. Goku tells him that he can't, since Chi-Chi won't feed him for a long time if he leaves! Kaiô-sama promises him as much food as he wants, and so Goku makes the (wrong to Chi-Chi!) decision of jumping up and teleporting off to Kaiô-sama's. The school board gasps in disbelief as Chi-Chi screams that Goku's hobbies are reading and sports!! Goku arrives on Kaiô-sama's planet, surprising him and Bubbles. When questioned about his tacky outfit, Goku jumps back, and lands in his traditional orange gi.

Paragus tells Vegeta that he wishes for him to return with him to rule over New Planet Vegeta! They will once again raise the mightiest empire in the universe. Vegeta, utterly disinterested, begins to walk off... until Paragus mentions that Vegeta is the only one who can defeat the "Densetsu no Sûpâ Saiya-jin" ("Legendary Super Saiyan"). Paragus explains that this legendary warrior is tearing through the universe, and even their New Planet Vegeta will fall without his help. As Trunks tries to stop his father, Vegeta walks off with Paragus into the spaceship. A (still) drunken Kame-Sen'nin drags Oolong, Kuririn, and Gohan into the ship, and Trunks flies after them just before the door closes. The spaceship takes off as Bulma and baby Trunks watch.

Back at Kaiô-sama's, Goku tears through bowl after bowl of food as the Lord of the Worlds explains that the Southern Galaxy has fallen to the Legendary Super Saiyan, whose power is even greater than theirs! Kaiô-sama asks Goku to go investigate in the Southern Galaxy. Goku uses Shunkan-idô to teleport there (after asking which way south is!), and soon senses a weak, but definitely Saiyan, ki...

Goku arrives on a dark and halfway destroyed planet. Paragus's spaceship approaches the same planet, as Paragus explains that it has been thirty years since Freeza destroyed Planet Vegeta. It has been his greatest wish to restore the planet since the untimely loss of King Vegeta. In a palace on a mountain cliff, hundreds of warriors applaud the arrival of "King Vegeta." Paragus introduces his son, Broli, a quiet young man. A warrior rushes in, saying they have discovered the location of the Legendary Super Saiyan. Vegeta orders Broli to come with him, much to Trunks's dismay. Paragus smirks as the two depart.

Kuririn, Trunks, and Gohan converse over the truth to such a story as they fly around, searching the planet. Gohan wonders why Paragus would want to rebuild on such a planet, when he spots a group of diminutive aliens hard at work. A small one, comforting his fallen elder, tells them not to be upset with them! Gohan explains that they're not here for those reasons, when an overseer appears and begins to whip the workers. Gohan rushes in and attacks him, asking why he would do such a terrible thing. The overseer whistles, prompting many more to arrive and surround Gohan. Kuririn, shaking his finger, tells them all that they've very strong, and begins to perform a series of punches and kicks in the air, showing off. Goku suddenly teleports in, and is hit right in the face by one of Kuririn's hits! Goku explains that he followed a Saiyan ki, and asks why everyone else is here. Paragus says his hello to "Kakarrot," noting he is the son of Bardock, and invites him to dinner.

Inside, Goku and his friends dine on a massive feast. Trunks, Gohan, and Kuririn bring food to Shamo (the small one who helped the elder, earlier) and his friends, and asks about their situation. In a dreamlike sequence, we see Paragus praising the soon-at-hand arrival of a comet, and killing one of his henchmen. Vegeta returns with Broli after having not found a trace of the Legendary Super Saiyan. Goku, sitting in a window, says hello to Vegeta as he walks by. Vegeta yells Goku not to interfere; he is the one who will slaughter the Legendary Super Saiyan. Broli walks by and pauses as he sees Goku, who turns around with a serious face. Broli begins to twitch as his father tells him to take it easy, putting a hand forward. Goku and Broli both begin to emit strange auras as Kame-Sen'nin rushes in (still drunk) demanding to be given a spaceship home. Broli seems to settle down.

In a back room, an octopus-type being tells Paragus to calm his ki, and repairs some kind of device that apparently controls Broli's power. Paragus wonders what could be wrong with Broli, and wonders if "Kakarrot" is the cause of this sudden change. In a flashback sequence, we see a younger Broli (mad with power) terrorizing a planet, already a Super Saiyan. Paragus explains that Broli was born with incredible power, so he was quite scared of his own son. He had a scientist create a necklace that would allow him to control Broli's power, which would be regulated via a wrist-device. Broli tries to kill his father when it is forcefully put on, but Paragus is able to control him at the last minute, saving his own life. Back in the present, Paragus opens the door to a room where Broli is sitting in a chair, barely under control of his own power, and thinks back to the time Broli was born. A newly-born Broli lays next to a baby Goku, who refuses to stop crying. As Paragus leaves, Broli looks up, screaming "Kakarrot!"

Goku wakes up as Broli breaks through the door into his room, attacking him. Goku flies outside, prompting Broli to follow. Paragus wakes up, grabs his wrist-control device, and takes off to find Broli, who continues his attack on Goku. Goku notices that Broli can increase his power all at once, just like the rest of them. Broli licks the blood off his own lip, and resumes his attack on Goku with a series of ki blasts from the sky. Goku's hits seem to do little damage, when he realizes that it was Broli's ki he sensed earlier! Paragus arrives on the scene and uses his device to try and calm Broli down. Goku asks Broli if he is the one who terrorized the Southern Galaxy, which prompts him to go into a maniacal laugh... but he is eventually subdued by Paragus, reducing his ki.

The comet out in space makes its way closer to the planet...

Vegeta and Broli go to leave, again, but Paragus pleads for them to remain on the planet for another day (for the Comet Gumori will be arriving, killing them all!). Vegeta turns around to see Broli losing control, muttering "Kakarrot!" when he hears Goku's innocent voice (and stomach!) echoing inside the spaceship. Goku tells Vegeta there is no need to leave; the Legendary Super Saiyan is right here... it's Broli! Paragus assures Vegeta this cannot be possible, since Broli's power is lower than his own. Trunks arrives, yelling to his father than it is all a sham, explaining that there are nothing but ruins beyond the walls of the palace. Gohan brings shamo and his friends by Goku and the others; Shamo points out that it was Broli who destroyed his world! Vegeta finally believes it, and realizes he has been tricked. Paragus goes on to tell them that he only used this planet because a comet would be colliding with it. Since he wanted to take over Earth, he wanted it unharmed... this planet would be the best place to destroy his opposition before taking their own home planet! Broli and he would have no enemies.

Broli walks forward, continuing to say "Kakarrot!" over and over, his ki growing larger each time. Vegeta, uttering "the Legendary Super Saiyan!" explodes into Super Saiyan mode and attacks Broli, doing no damage. Paragus orders Broli to kill them all, but realizes he has lost control over his son. Broli loses more and more control over his power as Goku and the others watch on in horror. Paragus warns Broli to not raise his ki any higher, but he is beyond reach. Broli's pupils disappear as he explodes into a strange, beefed-up Super Saiyan transformation. Vegeta slowly falls to the ground, in awe of the power before him... the true Legendary Super Saiyan! Broli informs "Kakarrot" that his blood will be the first to be sacrificed! Goku grabs Gohan and dodges the attacks as best he can, while Vegeta can do little more than stammer that they will all die. Paragus very calmly notes that Vegeta is the only one who instinctively saw the true power of Broli, and realized that his fate is to be killed.

Paragus explains that Vegeta's father, the King, ordered the assassination of Paragus and his son. In a flashback, Paragus rushes into the royal chambers, begging King Vegeta to spare their lives. King Vegeta decides that he will continue as planned, and blasts Paragus in the chest. We see a shadowy figure with a knife raise Broli from his crib, and slash forward... Paragus goes on to explain that they were both left for dead, but when Freeza attacked the planet and caused its destruction, Broli's power created a barrier around them, saving them from near-death. Since then, Paragus's only goal has been revenge against the Vegeta family.

Goku and Gohan continue to fly away from the attacking Super Saiyan Broli, whose blasts kill a giant number of Shamo's friends. Broli explains that he will simply destroy the entire planet, prompting Goku, Gohan, and Trunks all to transform into Super Saiyans. Vegeta yells for them all to stop... the Legendary Super Saiyan will slaughter them all! Goku, Gohan, and Trunks are all unable to land a single attack, and are knocked down through a mountain. Broli follows them with great speed, continuing to blast at them. Broli asks them if they truly believe they will defeat him with such a low power... when Kame-Sen'nin, Oolong, Kuririn, Shamo, and all his friends appear, falling down in a landslide! Everyone watches in disbelief, wondering what the heck is going on. Kame-Sen'nin pops up from the pile, says that he will have a round as this "Broccoli" guy, and then buffs up, preparing to attack! As he nearly finishes the Kamehameha stance, he instead goes into a comedic round of dances with masks and flags, as Kuririn notes that he's still extremely drunk. Broli notices Shamo (who seems to be named after his home planet) and the other "slaves," and fires a ki ball at Planet Shamo, causing its immediate explosion and destruction. Kuririn takes the others and runs off, as the second round of attacks begins...

Broli asks if Kakarrot's son is dear to him, and continues his attacks. Broli slams Gohan's head through a building. Gohan, unconscious, is caught by the scruff of his neck-area on a nail, and hangs off the building. Goku tries to rush after him, but Broli's attacks continue to push him back. Goku tells Broli that he's very persistent, and is hit back each time!

Broli mutters that his ki is rising even more than before, and screams in a rage of even more golden aura. Ki blasts fire off of him, destroying the surrounding landscape. Broli, once he calms down, looks around to see all of his foes down for the count... especially "Kakarotto no musuko" ("Kakarrot's son"). He fires a blast at the child... which is deflected! Piccolo poses atop a pole, and swings his cape out of the way. Broli proclaims himself to be a "devil," while Piccolo carries Gohan down and feeds him a Senzu. Piccolo continues with the Senzu, feeding them to Goku as he explains that he heard the conversation between him and Kaiô-sama, which clued him into their location. Piccolo rushes off to feed Trunks a Senzu, while we see Paragus welcoming the arrival of the comet. Vegeta, still unable to move, does nothing as Kuririn, Oolong, and Kame-Sen'nin take off in a spare spaceship.

Goku and Piccolo rush in and attack Broli, who dodges all of their blows. As he grabs them both, leaving an opening, Gohan and Trunks both fire a Masenkô, but it's no use... Broli plows forward through them all, blasting them one by one. Vegeta continues to watch in horror and disbelief as Piccolo falls before him. Piccolo picks up Vegeta by the head, asking what kind of "prince" he is, and carries him back to the fight. Piccolo screams that if Vegeta has lost this much heart, he is better off simply leaving them! Goku gasps for breath, praising Broli for his incredible strength, even asking Broli to take it easy on them!

Vegeta finally stands in the distance, watching the destruction before him. Broli walks forward towards Goku, who fires a Kamehameha at point-blank range into Broli's face... but it's no use. Broli grabs Goku by the head, asking what that was, just then. As the camera pans in on Vegeta, he rants on that he is Vegeta (the Saiyan prince, after all), explodes into Super Saiyan, and takes off. Trunks turns around to welcome his father, who rushes in to attack Broli. His hits either miss or do no damage, and is forced to retreat behind Trunks. Vegeta and Trunks are both knocked down and out of the fight.

Paragus walks up a flight of stairs, saying that he is sorry to leave his son to die with the planet, which only has a few hours left. As he sits in his space pod, Broli walks forward asking where his father is going. Paragus responds that he is preparing the ship for them, as Broli retorts, "In a single-seat pod?" Broli picks up the pod over his head, crushing it between his massive arms, as Paragus wonders if this is his fate... to be killed by his own son.

Goku, the only one left standing, walks towards Broli in the distance. Goku is determined to win, but Broli insists that this is where he will die! Piccolo yells for everyone to give Goku their power, and Goku welcomes it. Piccolo and Gohan all struggle up and offer their power to Goku with arms out-stretched. Goku's aura explodes with the energy, prompting Broli to attack. Goku's hits miss, however, and he is instantly knocked back to the ground. Broli lands on Goku, kicking him back and forth on the ground, firing ki blasts the whole time. Goku, unable to get up, asks for more power. Trunks now raises his arm, offering energy, which allows Goku to get up... only to be knocked down once again. Broli jumps up and down on Goku's body as if it were a trampoline, with a scream of complete pain and agony each time.

Goku eventually gets back up, but the comet is approaching more quickly than expected... there is little time. Vegeta, whispering, tells Goku that it's no use... they cannot win. Vegeta, the Saiyan prince, refuses to give his energy to a lower-class warrior, but Goku telepathically pleads for his energy and help. Broli decides he has had enough fun... it's time to kill Goku. Just before Broli's hit lands, Vegeta (screaming that he is the prince of the Saiyan race!) raises his arm and offers his energy. Goku is able to block the attack! Asking himself who he is to give energy to the "likes" of Goku, Vegeta collapses, unable to give any more. Piccolo, Gohan, and Trunks all follow suit.

As the comet enters the atmosphere, the planet begins to tear apart. Broli and Goku rush at each other. Goku is able to duck under Broli's attack, punching him in the stomach. Broli thinks back to the time Goku cried next to him at the hospital as newly-borns, and is knocked up into the sky with a giant blast of energy, causing a massive explosion. The planet is torn apart by the comet, leaving emptiness in space... until an overflowing space pod appears! Goku has teleported everyone into the ship (leaving it quite cramped), and gives the victory sign.

Kaiô-sama is relieved as Goku teleports back home with his son. Chi-Chi yells at him, but Goku remembers to say that his hobbies are reading and sports! Chi-Chi passes out as the narrator reminds us that it is the height of a calm spring on Earth.
