Kyôtsû no Taiteki
"A Great Enemy in Common"
Canon
Segment: 8 minutes 45 seconds
Just
to make sure Goku heard him, Raditz repeats himself: 100
dead humans are to be left here by this time tomorrow,
or his son dies. He says that if the bodies are here,
they'll then take the lives of millions of others, together.
Otherwise, he'll simply kill his nephew. Kuririn and the
others, frustrated at their uselessness, ask Raditz what
kind of a warrior he is, using a kid like that? Kame-Sen'nin
says that Goku could never just kill humans, anyway. Raditz
says that if Goku values the lives of some humans over
his son, fine. But he warns them all that after he and
the other Saiyans have exterminated the vermin on that
other planet, they'll all head to Earth, and give it a
once-over, too! His friends are immediately terrified,
and Raditz says that it really makes no difference at
all if 100 humans should die now, then. He continues,
saying that Goku doesn't even really have a choice at
all, as he will join them! Goku, still
reeling from the blow, barely manages to croak out, "Give
me back... my son!" Raditz urges Goku to make the
right decision, as he begins ascending to the sky. Finally,
he asks that Goku not try to fight him. Even if he had
enough power, he hasn't had nearly enough of the required
training. Gohan, sobbing, screams out for his father,
and Goku yells out his son's name. Raditz bids him farewell
until tomorrow, and flies away speedily, laughing.
Goku,
nearly in tears, smashes his fists on the ground in frustration,
cursing his helplessness. Goku's friends apologize for
not being able to help, and Goku then immediately yells
for Kinto-Un. The somersault cloud appears, and Goku attempts
to stand. His friends crowd around him, saying that he's
in no condition to fight just yet, but Goku says he needs
to do something. Bulma mentions how it's so unfortunate
that Goku meets a long-lost relative, but it turns out
to be someone like him. Kuririn wonders if anything
can be done against this foe, and Goku then says "His
tail". Goku reminds everyone on how his own tail
used to make him completely powerless if anyone ever grabbed
it, but Kuririn asks Goku if he thinks he can grab his
brother's tail without getting killed in the process.
Goku says that it's impossible... alone. Kuririn gasps,
being a teensy-bit frightened of going up against someone
like Raditz, but Kame-Sen'nin steps in and volunteers
his and Kuririn's services to Goku (though he adds on
that it would help to know the whereabouts of Yamcha and
Tenshinhan). Kuririn hopefully says that a victory could
be possible if the three of them fight together (though
he secretly has almost no hope), but then says that if
any of them should die, Bulma can resurrect them with
the dragon balls! Bulma says she definately would, but
Goku interrupts, saying that this idea is no good. "Shenlong
never grants the same wish twice." Since Kuririn
and Kame-Sen'nin have already died before, they'd be dead
for good this time around. This
unnerves this pair a great deal more, but they still want
to help Goku (Kuririn thinks to himself that he's probably
never going to get married). Bulma suggests finding all
of the Dragon Balls immediately and wishing to "save
the world," but Kame-Sen'nin says that finding all
seven in one day isn't possible. Deciding to head straight
into an attack, then, Goku asks Bulma to bring out the
Dragon Radar (since Gohan's hat has a Dragon Ball on top!),
letting them know where Raditz has gone to.
The
threesome prepares to leave the island to go after the
kidnapper, when a voice informs them that they have no
chance of victory. Piccolo appears, and the group becomes
even more terrified (except for Goku). When asked
why he's there, Piccolo says he's after Raditz (adding
that they've already met), and that he and Goku would
be the only possible combination against this worthy foe.
Goku says this may be true, but asks what Piccolo has
to gain from helping him. Piccolo says he doesn't care
in the least if Goku's son dies, but Raditz is interfering
with his plans for world domination. Then, in a somewhat
chilling statement, Piccolo mentions that as soon as Raditz
is killed, Goku's next. Goku says he won't let that happen,
but he agrees with Piccolo, and
volunteers to team up with him. Piccolo mentions that
he hopes he can contain his disgust towards Goku as they
work together. Bulma hands Goku the Dragon Radar, and
the pair fly from the island together, with Goku on Kinto-Un.
As they look skyward, Kuririn and Bulma doubt how well
this arrangement will work out, but Kame-Sen'nin says
that this is going to be one amazing fight, regardless!
He asks Bulma if she recalls where the Dragon Radar was
pointing, as he doesn't intend to miss watching the battle!

Chi-Chi
is at home, tidying Gohan's work desk, saying that Gohan
must be having a good time at the turtle hermit's house
if he's still not back yet. Being the kind of person she
is now, Chi-Chi seems to feel the need to go through all
of Gohan's things and tidy them all up as she sees fit.
She flips through a few pages of Gohan's notebooks, wondering
if he's finished all of his homework. Little does she
know what's actually going on with her husband and son...

Radittsu to no Taiketsu
"The Confrontation with Raditz"
Canon
Segment: 8 minutes 45 seconds
At
the crater where Raditz's ship landed, Raditz is getting
extremely annoyed with Gohan's constant crying. He locks
him inside his space pod to get some quiet, and then decides
to grab a bite to eat. Just then, however, his scouter
picks up a large power reading from close by. A combat
power of 710 is coming from... his space pod?! Refusing
to believe that Kakarrot's child, a mere infant, could
generate such a high reading, he dismisses it as a malfunction.
Goku,
still racing through the sky with Piccolo, checks
the Dragon Radar and notices that they're getting closer
to Raditz. He yells that they should descend now, to try
and get a sneak attack, but Piccolo yells back that it
will make no difference. He informs Goku of a strange
device that Raditz has, that lets him know his opponent's
location and combat strength. Realizing that Raditz must
then be detecting that they are coming, they continue
their head-on course.
Back
at the crater, Raditz's scouter again points out the 710
power reading coming from Gohan. While he's trying to
figure out why the scouter would be malfunctioning this
badly, he gets another power reading, coming from the
sky. He realizes that two fighters are rapidly approaching
him, with combat readings of 322 (Piccolo) and 334 (Goku).
While he's aware that Goku's combat reading exactly matches
what his scouter is now indicating, he decides that this,
too, must also be an error. Kakarrot would have more sense
than to try and fight him, and he has no idea how to find
him, anyway. He prepares to dispose of the scouter, when
he sees with his own eyes that Goku and Piccolo are in
the sky, about to reach him! Realizing the scouter may
not be broken after all, he fearfully spins around to
face his space pod. He can't believe that a child, even
a Saiyan child, could have a strength reading of 710!
Goku and Piccolo land, and Raditz smirks, asking how they
found him. Goku doesn't want to give him the details,
so Raditz then asks them why they wanted to find
him. Goku angrily screams that he obviously wants his
son back! Disappointed with this decision, Raditz asks
if Goku will really go against his own brother. Goku says
that he has no brother. Raditz hoped Goku to be smarter
than this: can Kakarrot honestly expect the two of them
to be enough of a match? Piccolo finally speaks, as he
throws his weighted clothing away, saying that Raditz
talks too much. Goku is surprised to see that Piccolo
was wearing weighted clothing too, as he removes his own.
Watching on his scouter, he sees Goku's combat reading
rise to 416, and Piccolo's to 408. Only slightly surprised,
he gives a loud laugh, telling them that they still have
no chance. Goku argues that they do, and Raditz is finally
fed up with his idiocy. He yells that Goku is a disgrace
to the Saiyan race, and that he will now DIE! Raditz lunges
at them head on, but elbows them in their backs! The
pair tumble forward, but regain themselves, and position
themselves across from Raditz so that the three of them
form an equilateral triangle. Goku can't believe Raditz's
speed, and Piccolo is also astonished:
Raditz charged toward them from the front, but his blows struck
them from behind! Smiling, Raditz says that their
defenses aren't bad, but he's now going to begin attacking
them harder and harder. Piccolo realizes that Raditz has
been hiding his power, and Goku wonders if grabbing his
tail is even possible. Seeing how at a loss for words
the pair is, Raditz decides to inform them of something
really chilling. He says that even if they manage
to strike him down, his two Saiyan partners are even stronger
than he is!

THIS
AND THAT: |
This would be the first reference of Kuririn mentioning that he believes his
untimely demise is near, and thus will "never get a girlfriend/get married".
I'll be sure to point out all references to it in the future, as it is quite
the amusing running gag (you really start to feel for the poor, dateless
wonder after about the third time he says it, heh)
One of the restrictions of the Dragon Balls is mentioned in this episode, in
that Shenlong cannot grant the same wish more than once. |
ALTERED
SCENE: |
In
the anime, Piccolo floats down from above the Kame
House after Raditz leaves, whereas in the manga,
he simply steps out from behind the house on the
ground. |
MISSING
SCENE: |
There
are two panels of Piccolo standing behind the Kame
House in the manga, as he eavesdrops on the entire
interaction with Raditz. These weren't present in
the anime, for some reason (it's unexplained why
he levitates down after Raditz leaves, as mentioned
above. He'd look a little too easy to see on the
roof ^_^) |
MISCELLANEOUS: |
In the anime, there's a short filler scene of Gohan hiding behind the
farmer's truck from episode 1, in an attempt to hide from Raditz. Raditz
responds to this by punching into the truck, lifting it into the air, and
vaporizing it. He then stuffs Gohan into his ship.
In the anime, after Raditz's scouter picks up Goku and Piccolo's combat
readings, he dismisses it as a malfunction and decides to grab something to
eat (specifically, a bear, once we get a look at the remains!)
After Goku arrives to fight with Raditz in the anime, Gohan hears his father's voice, and
attempts to break out of his prison with a kick to the door (but all he ends
up doing is hurting himself). |
