New DB Song Covers w/ Bakuman DVD/Blu-ray Releases
VegettoEX @ 11:50 am EST -- The second volume of the Bakuman anime is due out on 23 February 2011 in Japan, and the Limited Edition version of both the DVD and Blu-ray will come with a bonus CD. How does this related to DragonBall, you may ask? Satoshi Hino (voice of Bakuman character Akito Takagi) will be performing two cover songs on this bonus CD, including "Makafushigi Adobenchâ!" ("Mystical Adventure!"), the opening theme to the first DragonBall TV series.

UPDATE: It looks like the Limited Edition DVD and Blu-ray releases of the first volume will actually contain a bonus CD with a cover of "CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA", as well. The first volume of the Bakuman TV series is due out on 26 January 2010.

The DragonBall series and its author are apparently mentioned several times by the two main Bakuman characters, so it certainly seems like an appropriate tie-in. I simply do not think I can justify spending $70 on a single cover song, though...

Podcast Episode #0243: 2010 "Year-In-Review"
VegettoEX @ 8:40 pm EST -- It has certainly been a crazy year, this here 2010. The prior year may have given us DragonBall Kai, but this year was no slouch in the crazy announcement department. We had our fair share of sad moments over the course of 2010, as well, unfortunately. Tune in for a full recap of all the year's biggest stories, a check-in on our predictions from last year, and a look at what we think 2011 has in store for us. Download the show now, or head on over to the podcast page for more information or to subscribe.

FUNimation's Dragon Box 5 Delayed + Dragon Box 6 Dated
VegettoEX @ 2:12 pm EST -- Amidst a huge amount of delays for early 2011, FUNimation has pushed back the fifth DragonBall Z Dragon Box two months to a new date of 26 April 2011. Thankfully, they have at least also announced a date for the sixth Dragon Box, which is scheduled for 05 July 2011.

FUNimation's re-release of the first DragonBall movie is officially out today, which leaves only "Part Four" of DragonBall Kai due out in March in the mean time.

Our 2010 "Year In Review" podcast episode was recorded last night (which includes everyone's favorite look-back at last year's predictions), so look for that before the end of the week!

Podcast Episode #0242 + News Catch Up
VegettoEX @ 8:35 pm EST -- We thought we would be taking it easy this week on the show due to sickness all around and lack of any significant news, but that all got tossed out the window when the Toriko announcement (see below) came into play. Hujio and I broke everything down in a logical fashion, with the knowledge that more information is probably heading our way very soon. What is on the horizon for DragonBall Kai...? Download the show now, or head on over to the podcast page for more information or to subscribe.

In other (yet slightly-related) news, Unshô Ishizuka indeed took over the role of Mr. Satan beginning with this weekend's episode 86 of DragonBall Kai. Other than briefly voicing the character in TAG VS for the PSP earlier this year, there had been no word whether it would be Ishizuka himself or someone else eventually taking the role in the refreshed TV series.

Sadly, another veteran voice actor has also passed away, unfortunately joining greats such as Hirotaka Suzuoki and Daisuke Gôri. Takeshi Watabe passed away this month at age 74. While certainly a big name in the field, his contributions to the DragonBall franchise were limited. Perhaps his most well-known role was that of Panbukin in the first DragonBall Z TV special, though he did play one-off characters in both the first TV series as well as DragonBall GT.

As a minor aside and follow-up to our previous podcast episode examining DragonBall SD, while nothing official has been confirmed, there does not seem to be any indication that it will be anything more than the single chapter in this month's debut issue of Saikyô Jump. The quarterly magazine's plans for March do not list a second chapter of DragonBall SD anywhere just yet, though this could certainly change.

Kai Japanese Broadcast Update + More Amazon Deals
VegettoEX @ 10:06 am EST -- As our buddies over on Kanzentai have detailed, the future broadcast of DragonBall Kai in Japan seems to be slightly up in the air.

Anime News Network is reporting that an upcoming issue of Weekly Shônen Jump reveals that a full TV adaptation of the manga Toriko will debut on Fuji TV in April 2011 in the 9:00 am time slot, which is immediately before One Piece at 9:30 am, and is currently held by DragonBall Kai.

The first thing to note that that there has not been any official confirmation yet as to what the fate of DragonBall Kai may be.

We have cleared up several rumors surrounding the production of the series over the last two years, but some of the misinformation seems to pop up time and time again. It is important to note that the "100 episodes" rumor stemmed back to when the series was first announced, but was never part of the advertising of the series, and instead came out of Japanese message boards.

A later "50 episodes" rumor came out of a Digimon announcement, but was clearly proven false with time and a tentative DVD release schedule from Happinet — DragonBall Kai just aired its 85th episode this past weekend. Incidentally, Happinet's current release schedule extends through at least episode 98, which would likely be the end of the "Jinzôningen & Cell Arc" currently airing on TV.

Much (though admittedly not all) of the merchandise for the entire DragonBall franchise has been branded as Kai for quite some time — a couple of video games, figures, calendars, and more — many of which include characters well beyond the scope of what the DragonBall Kai TV series has aired, as well as the occasional movie-exclusive character (which clearly falls outside the boundaries of the more-manga-centric Kai).

So what is the deal, here? Will DragonBall Kai extend into the Majin Buu story arc? As noted on Kanzentai, we have a few possibilities:

  • Kai will be moved to a new time slot
  • Kai will be put on hiatus
  • Kai will be canceled

We have researched and spoken extensively as a community about the economic situation of the DragonBall franchise, so at this point we would honestly believe and understand just about any outcome. Next April would mark two full years of DragonBall Kai, having debuted 05 April 2009 and thus creating the "Dream 9" time slot with One Piece.

In totally unrelated news, those of you still looking for a couple last-minute holiday deals can still grab a couple cheap items over on Amazon. Prices have been fluctuating each and every day, but right now you can pick up the following (all North American versions of their respective releases):

DragonBall: Raging Blast 2 (PS3) $34.99
DragonBall: Raging Blast 2 (360) $34.99
DragonBall: Revenge of King Piccolo (Wii) $9.29
Super DragonBall Z (PS2) $11.12
DBZ TV Dragon Box Vol. 1 $24.99
DragonBall Z Kai: Part 1 (DVD) $18.49
DragonBall Z Kai: Part 1 (Blu-ray) $19.99
DragonBall Z Kai: Part 2 (DVD) $18.49
DragonBall Z Kai: Part 2 (Blu-ray) $19.99

Happy shopping, and here's hoping you get what you want!

Two New Kai Insert Songs + Battle of Omega CD Cover
VegettoEX @ 2:52 pm EST -- Hot on the heels of episode 82 last month, this past weekend's episode 85 of DragonBall Kai featured not one, but two new insert songs:

"My 18th Magic", performed by cAnON., played on the radio in the background of a scene with the Son family and Kuririn driving along, shortly before it is announced that the army is about to take on Cell.

"Seru Gêmu no Oshirase" ("News of the Cell Game"), performed by Kenji Ôtsuki, played during Cell's retaliation against the army.

Both songs recently appeared on the new album DragonBall Kai Soundtrack III & Songs, though (like "Tatta Hitori no Senshi" before them) there was no hint that any of the three new vocal songs would eventually end up in the show. Check out our review of Soundtrack III & Songs back on Episode #0237 of our podcast.

In other music news, the cover art for the Battle of Omega CD single has been revealed:

"Battle of Omega" is performed by Hironobu Kageyama and is the opening theme to the franchise's most recent video game, Raging Blast 2 for the PS3 and 360. Check out our review of the game, and expect a review of the CD single in the new year.

Holiday Sale Links + Bonus Podcast Episode
VegettoEX @ 9:27 am EST -- In case you missed out on some great deals we have been tossing out via Twitter and Facebook, there are a couple last ones to snatch up before the new year hits.

We have a bunch of other news updates coming your way soon, but if you need some extra audio content to keep you entertained in the mean time, head on over to Anime3000 to listen to an episode of the "Bonus Round" with myself and Herms speaking with the group about DragonBall Kai. The episode was recorded this past July, but is for a more-general audience and is therefore still relevant on the major points. Those of you who subscribe to the podcast here on the site will have already gotten the episode through the feed.

Podcast #0241 (DragonBall SD) + Raging Blast 2 Review
VegettoEX @ 4:48 pm EST -- On 03 December 2010, Shueisha released a new magazine called Saikyô Jump. Included in it was the debut of a new spin-off called DragonBall SD, which we have been tracking for a few weeks, now. The one-shot from Naho Ooishi reintroduces the audience to little Son Goku and follows him over the span of a single chapter interacting with his new master (Kame-Sen'nin) and new best friend (Kuririn).

We discussed DragonBall SD on this week's podcast episode, so tune in to find out if it is truly a fresh take on the franchise, or just another example of "been there, done that". Download the show now, or head on over to the podcast page for more information or to subscribe.

On the video game side of things, I am extremely happy to finally bring the complete review for Raging Blast 2. The game came out last month, and while we have covered it extensively in bits and pieces, the full review covers everything you need to know about the latest game for our favorite franchise. Check it out over in the "Reviews" section.

Speaking of video games, we have just brought our latest contest to a close. Up for grabs were copies of Raging Blast 2 on both the PS3 and 360, as well as Tenkaichi Tag Team for the PSP, all courtesy of Namco-Bandai. We always like to toss an extra twist at the end, so congrats will be going out to two folks for winning copies of the PSP game!

Chris Marino and Allan Rodriguez are walking away with copies of Raging Blast 2 for the 360 and PS3, respectively, while Jose Manuel Amador and Alexi Ojima both have copies of Tenkaichi Tag Team for the PSP coming their way. Congrats to the four winners, and as for the rest of you... there is more coming your way, so stay tuned to the website!

I have one last thing to send you off into the week with - Hujio and I recently got together to record a bonus podcast about Akira Toriyama's own latest one-shot entitled Kintoki. You can learn a little bit more about it and download the podcast over on my personal blog. Those of you who subscribe to the podcast here at Daizenshuu EX already received it in your feed earlier this week, so those of you who still grab podcasts the old fashioned way may want to consider subscribing!
