29 March 2010
VegettoEX @ 3:24 pm EDT -- Our "Reviews" section gets fleshed out a little bit with its latest addition today:
It has been out for about a month now, but we finally got a chance to spend some time with FUNimation's second "Dragon Box" release for the DBZ TV series. With their release of (Z) Kai coming out in about a month, is this genuinely-definitive version of DBZ still worth it? You can probably call our answer from a mile away, but check it out, regardless! |

VegettoEX @ 12:08 am EDT -- This week on the show, we finally got around to taking a look at one of the more popular fan-manga out there called Dragon Ball Multiverse out of France!
It has been two years since we looked at Toyble's Dragon Ball AF fan-comic, and it made sense for us to give the other "big" one its fair shot. Does the concept do more for us than the actual execution, or is there enough genuinely interesting story-telling going on? Download the show now, or head on over to the podcast page for more information or to subscribe.
As you tune in, you will probably notice another huge jump in the sound quality. It made sense after five years or so to finally encode at a higher bitrate. You're welcome!
(Just a quick note... the Dragon Box 2 review mentioned during the episode isn't quite ready to go live, but hopefully it will be later today... after a solid night's sleep!) |
25 March 2010
VegettoEX @ 2:16 pm EDT -- We are passing along a little bit of second-hand information, but we put decent-enough faith in it to warrant sharing it. Our buddy EvilGamerX gave us word that a "friend at nicktoons" has shared that the American television debut of DragonBall (Z) Kai will begin 24 May 2010 and will air four days a week, though a timeslot has not yet been finalized. Songs will also be in English, though it is unclear if that simply includes the opening and ending themes, or extends to the mid-episode insert songs (such as "Over the Star" and "Saiyan Blood").
As we have known for a while, the first 13 episodes of the "refreshed" version of the DBZ TV series will be released domestically on DVD and Blu-ray on 18 May 2010. A premier of the first four episodes with their new English dub are actually set to debut at Sakura-Con next Saturday at 8:30 pm during the convention.
We are still holding out until the physical product is in our hands, but it sounds like the domestic release of Kai will indeed be in a 4:3 aspect ratio in some capacity. The Amazon Blu-ray listing is for a 4:3 product, while the DVD is for a "widescreen" product, mirroring the Japanese release style. When asked on Twitter by various members of our community, @funimation has responded that the show will be 4:3, though this still does not provide a comprehensive explanation on the TV broadcast versus the DVD release versus the Blu-ray release. If Japan is teaching us anything, it is that their own products can be just as confusing as any American release!
Finally, Sakura-Con has also announced Ryô Horikawa (Vegeta) as another Guest of Honor, joining Mayumi Tanaka (Kuririn, Yajirobe) for a fantastic lineup. Any photos or videos that community members would like to take and share with us would be greatly appreciated! |

VegettoEX @ 10:43 am EDT -- Having reached the appropriate place in our monthly "Manga Review of Awesomeness", it made sense to take pause and focus in on Trunks for an episode.
This week we take a look at "TRUNKS: THE STORY", the special manga chapter that was later adapted into the second DBZ TV special, and compare the two. How do the direct contradictions between the original source and the animated adaptation affect our enjoyment? Is Trunks a genuinely interesting character, or is his world the actual interesting thing? Download the show now, or head on over to the podcast page for more information or to subscribe. |
16 March 2010
VegettoEX @ 10:35 am EDT -- Totally forgot to mention these upcoming books in a news post, despite talking about them at length in the latest podcast episode. Whoops!
Our buddies at Kanzentai picked up on two new DragonBall books that Shueisha has listed for the near-future. The first is DragonBall Uranai, coming out in just a couple weeks on 31 March 2010 for a mere ¥840. We know absolutely nothing about it yet, and no online retailers seem to have a listing for it. The other book, DragonBall Ôgon no Senshi ("DragonBall: The Golden Warrior"), is specifically noted as an "Anime Illustration Collection" and will drop on 16 April 2010 for ¥1200; Amazon Japan actually has a listing up for that one already.
So we have an as-of-yet-unidentified-but-cheap book in a couple weeks, and a hopefully-new art book in little while after that.
You podcast subscribers will also notice a little bonus in your feeds this morning. This past weekend, Julian and I hopped on with the guys from the Unofficial One Piece Podcast to talk about the two series, their connections, fandoms, etc. There was an attempted focus on the Toriyama and Oda interview from the first Color Walk, as well as the cross-over manga Cross Epoch... but we also talked about a whole lot more! Download the show now, or head on over to their podcast page for more information or to subscribe. |

VegettoEX @ 1:45 pm EDT -- Clearly there was a good bit of news this week, so we took the opportunity to dive into it full-force alongside some other great material we have been working on for you. Our good friend Hujio joins me for an in-depth discussion of all the recent news, including a hint of a team-up between Viz and FUNimation that our forum buddy Innagadadavida tipped us off about.
We also got a chance to speak with Amber Rosier, the founder of the "DragonBall Z Appreciation Club" at Shawnee State University in Ohio! My experiences with even uttering the name of a character from DBZ during my tenure as president of my college's anime club seem to be the complete opposite of the awesomeness that Amber has going on, so definitely tune in to hear some great stories of fans coming together.
Download the show now, or head on over to the podcast page for more information or to subscribe.
We are going to have some bonus podcast material coming for you very soon courtesy of some other friends, so be on the lookout for that, as well...! |
11 March 2010
VegettoEX @ 10:01 am EST -- By way of Anime News Network, we have just learned that FUNimation's English dub of DragonBall Kai (coming as DragonBall Z Kai) will be airing on Nicktoons. The announcement was made "during its 2010 Upfront Presentation for advertisers on Thursday morning in New York City".
This is a somewhat fascinating move on many levels, especially since American fandom so closely associates the franchise with Cartoon Network (though the series aired on local TV syndicates for Fox and WB years prior to this arrangement).
We have no word yet on what kind of "uncut" or "edited" version will make its way to Nickelodeon portals. It should be noted, however, that the series always was intended for children, and the recent "edits" made during the Japanese broadcast of Kai certainly solidify this fact and the intended audience.
The broadcast will begin in May, seemingly alongside the home release. We will, of course, review the home release when it comes out. Look forward to it!
UPDATE: From the official press release --
Dragon Ball Z Kai, premiering on Nicktoons in May 2010, follows the last descendants of an evil race of warriors, known as the Saiyans, on their collision course with Earth. Goku--the strongest fighter on the planet--is all that stands between humanity and extinction and must face the villainous Saiyan warlord. Dragon Ball Z Kai is developed by Funimation Entertainment.
Is anyone seeing anything about an actual TV broadcast that is clearly described...? I certainly am not. Nicktoons is indeed a special digital television channel, but in this press release, Kai is listed under "digital nets", a seemingly-separate section from their standard TV broadcast material (all for the main Nickelodeon network). Is this intended to be "digital cable networks"...? Is my lack of cable TV (which is fantastic!) just blinding me from what you all see as obvious? With all of FUNimation's own online initiatives, it doesn't make sense for it to be wrapped up by someone else for streaming... and yet... it just isn't clear.
(Yes, it's probably coming to television.)
We are reaching out to FUNimation for further clarification, and whether or not it will include any other online initiatives (such as subtitled streams, FUNimation's own video services, etc.). |

VegettoEX @ 12:07 pm EST -- We are back in the swing of things! Our secondary recording rig bit the big one this week, so while we may sound a little "airy" at times, all the content you know and love is there for you. We finally picked back up with Volume 33 in our "Manga Review of Awesomeness" and have a hard time deciding if this was a natural "cool-down" period to get us where we are heading next in the story. Download the show now, or head on over to the podcast page for more information or to subscribe (for free!).
For the record — Cell has a tiny, pointy nose. Confirmed. |
04 March 2010
VegettoEX @ 3:58 pm EST -- We may have given it a listen back on Episode #0202 of our podcast, but it was time to finally get around to posting a full, written review! You can now read my carefully-crafted thoughts on Hironobu Kageyama's CD single for Progression, the opening theme to the semi-recent Raging Blast on the PS3/360. It is up in our ever-growing "Reviews" section, so if you are into deep reading, be sure to check it all out.
Our Facebook fans got a sneak-peak at the review yesterday, so be sure to follow us there and on Twitter for these kinds of things! |
