SERIES #6
Trunks

Discs: 33-34/35 (2 individual volumes)
Episodes: 103-110 English / 118-125 Japanese

AVAILABILITY:

  • Uncut, Bilingual (English / Japanese) with subtitles; English track features FUNimation voice cast & redone musical score
  • No official box set released for individual discs in "Series #6"

FUNimation had initially released the two Trunks discs with a few flaws (such as the excessive height of the subtitles on the screen). Another disc was planned in the Trunks series, being the Burger King promotional episodes (two episodes; 109-110 English / 124-125 Japanese) which were originally offered on VHS only through a special value-meal promotion with the fast food company. A single, two-episode disc was planned, but was eventually scrapped with no official announcement. Instead, the two Trunks discs were re-released with a few actual enhancements (eye-catches were put back in, opening and ending themes surround each episode, subtitle heights reverted back to normal, and a few typos were fixed). In addition to this, the two Burger King promotional episodes were thrown at the end of the second Trunks disc (again, with no official announcement). Volume 34 was renamed to volume 34/35 to reflect this change. These discs could be identified by their smaller "splash" in the bottom-right of the cover.

Continuing onwards with their success from before, FUNimation's "remastered" DBZ Season Four box set saw its release to DVD (entirely replacing the original run of "Series #5", "Series #6", and "Series #7"). Touted as a complete remastering, this release was produced in a (cropped) widescreen presentation with a "remastering" process by Video Post & Transfer in Texas. Despite FUNimation's claims, the set is indeed cropped (missing approximately 20% of its vertical resolution while only gaining approximately 5% of its horizontal resolution), it is not remastered frame-by-frame from its original film, and the color has been adjusted. Of note is the inclusion of a new audio track, featuring FUNimation's traditional voice track (with minor line alterations where appropriate) played alongside the original Japanese musical score. FUNimation continued with this release style for the entirety of the DBZ TV series, marking the first time it had ever received a "consistent" release from beginning to end in North America. This release also negated the original numbering of episodes for their dub, and would provide a complete run of 291 episodes.
