Daizenshuu EX - General - Ask VegettoEX

We all frequent message boards and online forums (such as alt.fan.dragonball), and we all contribute as much as we can. Unfortunately, we don't KNOW of all the places people post questions, so it's impossible for us to reach everyone. However, if you're reading this, you at least know where WE are, so it's possible for you to ask us directly.

What we're going for here is sort of an "Answerman" or "Ask John" (from Anime News Network and Anime Nation, respectively). We'd like you to e-mail in whatever questions you may have, so long as it somehow relates to the world of DragonBall; be it the manga, the anime, merchandise.. whatever. We've been around for a few years, now, and we know the ropes... we like to think we know our stuff.

And we want to help. E-mail your questions to VegettoEX@aol.com with the subject "Ask VegettoEX." We'll try to update this section every weekend with at least one question straight from the fans. Thanks!

Q. How much longer do you plan to keep Daizenshuu EX open? It's the last reliable and frequently updated info DB site. It'd really be a shame if it folded over like the rest. - Space Monkey

A. That's an incredibly difficult question to answer, mostly because as-of right now, I have no interest in shutting down the site. As far as I can tell, I'll be running it for years to come. The site's existence has very little to do with whether the show is popular, or even still being produced. I'm not one of those fans who turns their back on a show after time; my love is still there, and I don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon. - VegettoEX

Q. Was Dragon Ball considered a children's show in Japan? I know that a lot of the products were marketed to little kids, but there's a lot of parts in the series that go beyond what most anime kid's show go to (heads exploding, Kame-Sen'nin and that shrink machine, Kuririn getting impaled, etc...) - Space Monkey

A. Of course it's a children's show. Don't let anyone tell you differently. It's not a show for an "older teenage" audience, and it's not a show for adults... it's a show for children. Note that I simply did not say that teenagers and adults can't enjoy it... they can, they do, and it's obvious to see why.

The show aired Wednesday nights at 7 pm... right after dinner, and before prime-time. Perfect for the kids. Also, look at the merchandise. Super Power Desk? Swimming pool eye drops? Hardly targeted towards the business man! - VegettoEX

Q. I've heard that there were a couple traffic safety (or something of the like) specials aired in Japan years ago that used original animation. Do you have any access to that footage? (screencaps!) I've searched everywhere from the Japanese sites to the French, and the Spanish, and the German... Does this even exist? - Space Monkey

A. There appears to have been both a traffic safety and fire-fighters specials (about 11 minutes and 15 minutes long, respectively) that were produced in 1988, as well as a five year anniversary TV special that aired 31 December 1993. I know Ramza (of the old Dragon Ball Blast) has a crap-quality version of the fifth anniversary special on VHS, but no-one that I'm aware of has these children's education specials.

You can find official listings here and here, though. - VegettoEX

Q. Are there downsides to Super Saiyan 4? - Wassup2

A. Beyond the fact that it takes an enormous amount of energy, skill, and talent to keep yourself in the form, not really. Then again, what do I know? - VegettoEX

Q. What does Kame-Sen'nin mean when he asks to "pafu pafu" Bulma's breasts? - Luis

A. He wants to take his hands, place them on her breasts, stuff his face in between them, and move his head back and forth going "Puff Puff~!!" What did you think he meant... ? He wanted to take them out for dinner... ? - VegettoEX

Q. I've seen a few replica Dragonball models on eBay, even entered one and almost won. Now my question is, do you know the origin of this / or any other Dragonball replicas? I'd love to get hold of one, and Google just isn't giving me any answers. I've pretty much asked around all message boards and forums, too, and no one seems to know anything! Thanks in advance! - Aidan Hornsby

A. All I know is that they were given away as a promotional item at some convention / conference. A friend of a friend obtained one at some point, and that's really all I know. I have absolutely no idea where you'd get a hold of one, other than hoping they show up on eBay again sometime soon, and you don't get sniped ^^. - VegettoEX

Q. I was wondering about the Super Dragon Fist technique. Son Goku uses the Super Dragon Fist in Dragonball Z Movie #13 and as well in Dragonball GT. I was wondering if there was a possibility that Shenlong may have taught Goku the technique since Goku's energy turns his body into a dragon that resembles Shenlong? In the final episode of Dragonball GT it seems that Goku and Shenlong had everything planned by having Goku hop on Shenlong's back setting for his departure. How or when could all of this had happened without being shown in the series? - Mr Negotiator E

A. The simple answer? Toei came up with the storyline. Look at their storylines in the past (all of the movies, Garlic Jr, random filler)... since when did any of it ever make logical sense?! :P

When / how did Goku learn the technique? Hard to say. I guess we're left to assume that he just.. well... learned it. Perhaps it was something spontaneous that he developed in the heat of the moment, so to speak, when it was up to him. We really don't know. Trying to throw some examples from GT into the mix will only confuse it :P. - VegettoEX

Q. Another question I have is when they show 100 years into the future in the final episode of Dragonball GT and Son Goku is shown, how is it that Son Goku still appears to be young. Even though Goku was turned into a little kid again, did he grow up naturally again? Even if he did, he would still be old. When Son Goku absorbed the Dragonballs he disappeared on Shenlong's back, did that make him immortal or a sense of being which is not immortal but able to retain an age of an adult that's young? - Mr Negotiator E

A. I think what's really going on with Goku is left up to you to decide and interpret. I could give you my explanation, but I don't have the time or space to do so right now (although I'm planning on doing a nice analysis of the ending at some point soon). He's clearly no longer a regular mortal being, anymore. Is he immortal? Is he a God? It's not said. - VegettoEX

Q. Just a quick question. I was wondering whether when movie 9, Bojack Unbound, comes out in August, if we would be getting a three movie box set (of films 7-9) like we did of the previous three DBZ films, 4-6. Getting them in these box set forms for a casual DBZ fan like myself is really nice. So, any word on another box set of some kind?- Valvados

A. There's no way I can accurately answer your question at this point in time, not working for FUNimation, and all ^^;;. I can say, however, that it makes sense. I wouldn't expect said box set for a while, though... remember that the 1-3 and 4-6 box sets didn't come out until quite some time after all three in their packaging had been released. - VegettoEX

Q. Is there a DragonBallV? if u say no ure wrong i have proof - AlexB1002

A. If you're so in-the-know, then why are you asking me if I know anything?

Clearly, with your superior grasp on the English language, you have also defeated me in your quest for advanced knowledge of all things DragonBall. - VegettoEX

THIS WEEK'S MESSAGE BOARD DISCUSSION:

Here we are in the latest week of this new feature! I think it's a really neat thing to add to the section, and I'm glad to see people are getting involved. Please feel free to contribute to the discussion, and even start up your own!

Q. Does anybody know where I can order the new Dragon Ball cards by Bandai? The artwork on those cards are so awesome! You can check them out on the official site, http://www.carddas.com/dragonball. - Nyogo

A. Read over the discussion, here! Maybe we can bring Vegeta's all-consuming pride down a couple of notches... :D

We're trying to stay with our weekly schedule for the section... so... e-mail us your questions for next week's update! We love getting all these questions, each week, so the more you send us, the more we can (try to) answer for you!
