  Daizenshuu EX - Ask VegettoEX

We all frequent message boards and online forums (such as alt.fan.dragonball), and we all contribute as much as we can. Unfortunately, we don't KNOW of all the places people post questions, so it's impossible for us to reach everyone. However, if you're reading this, you at least know where WE are, so it's possible for you to ask us directly.

What we're going for here is sort of an "Answerman" or "Ask John" (from Anime News Network and Anime Nation, respectively). We'd like you to e-mail in whatever questions you may have, so long as it somehow relates to the world of DragonBall; be it the manga, the anime, merchandise... whatever. We've been around for a few years, now, and we know the ropes... we like to think we know our stuff.

And we want to help. E-mail your questions to VegettoEX@aol.com with the subject "Ask VegettoEX." We'll try to update this section every Saturday, with at least one question straight from the fans. Thanks!

Q. "FUNimation is also considering the market potential of re-releasing the first 13 episodes of original DragonBall to DVD uncut and unedited"...is this true? If so, then when do you think it will be coming out? - James Machuga

A. KidMark currently owns the sub-license for home distribution of the first thirteen episodes of DragonBall, as well as the first movie. We, as of yet, do not know when this sub-license expires. It's been announced that Pioneer's sub-license on DBZ (first two seasons, first three movies) expires on August 31st of this year, but that's an ENTIRELY different contract and series of negotiations and releases. Rest assured, once we know when this happens, we'll pass along the info.

Those who kept up with Cartoon Network when they began airing the original DragonBall will have seen the re-dub of the first thirteen episodes (which used the same in-house FUNimation cast that we've grown to...know...over the last few years). While these thirteen re-dubbed episodes were far from "uncut," they were a tiny bit closer than the original FUNimation dub was with the Ocean cast (and, it used the original score! Whee!). An uncut dub WAS produced (presumably with an ENTIRELY new dub script this time), so I'm sure we'll see this released on disc eventually, once KidMark's sub-license expires.

Q. The other day, I picked up a dubbed copy of DBZ Movie 3, entitled "Super Battle For the World." The dubbing was in English, however, it was completely different from FUNi's. To put it mildly, the dubbing was bad. Goku was stranded with a typical Super Hero voice and the rest of the cast was placed with nasal, annoying voices. The original score was kept in, and apparently the original title too. Now it appears that the company who dubbed this has also dubbed all other 12 Movies (or at least most of them). The credits show the name "Bridge Entertainment." Any ideas of this mystery dubbing (or at least, it's a mystery to me!) ?- Gabe J. Buijs

A. Well, "Bridge Entertainment" seems to be based out of the Netherlands. I'm a little confused as to why they're producing an English dub, since the whole site's in Dutch. Hmm. Is this, perhaps, just a copy of the English Philippine dub? That cast was pretty damn bad, but they did keep the original Japanese score.

Hell, I dunno. I'm just making guesses. Makes sense, though.

Q. I have an MP3 of an English version of "Makafushigi Adventure!" and I was wondering if you knew where it came from? It's not the "Lost 80's Dub" theme tune (for one thing, it refers to Goku, not Zero) and it's not the new FUNimation dub either. Is there another dub?- Matthew Forman

A. That's not an MP3; that's an MP2! Back in the ol' days before MP3s were wide-spread, Wuken and other DBZ site maintainers began posting music in the MP2 (MPEG-1 Layer-2) audio format. The file in question originally came from this site, back in 1997:

http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/6521/ (You'll notice links to "3 Steps Over the Edge" and "Dragon Word" on there...Jesus CHRIST, does that take me back... x_X;;)

That's right, 1997...and the MP2 is still floating around (although, someone along the way mistakenly re-named the file-extension to MP3). It's the same ol' 32 kbps, 44 kHz, mono MP2s that everyone was doing back in the day :D.

Anyway, the track is off the CD entitled "Songs of a High Spirited Saga," which was released in the Philippines quite some time ago. I've been trying to track down a copy SINCE 1997 when I first came across this page, but of course, there's no way in Hell I ever will.

Anyway, from the page: "All songs are originally published by Fujipacific Music Inc. & subpublished by Fujipacific Music (S.E. Asia) Ltd." The lyrics were by Vicky Salvador, with music by Takeshi Ike (the original Japanese composer).

That's it for this week! E-mail us your questions for next week's update! It's not like I've got better things to do than answer all your questions :P. Actually, I do... but I really have fun with it, so load me up with these impossible questions so I've got material for you all next week. Ja~
