We all
frequent message boards and online forums (such as alt.fan.dragonball),
and we all contribute as much as we can. Unfortunately,
we don't KNOW of all the places people post questions, so
it's impossible for us to reach everyone. However, if you're
reading this, you at least know where WE are, so it's possible
for you to ask us directly.
What
we're going for here is sort of an "Answerman"
or "Ask John" (from Anime
News Network and Anime
Nation, respectively). We'd like you to e-mail in whatever
questions you may have, so long as it somehow relates to
the world of DragonBall; be it the manga,
the anime, merchandise... whatever. We've been around for
a few years, now, and we know the ropes... we like to think
we know our stuff.
And
we want to help. E-mail
your questions to VegettoEX@aol.com with the subject "Ask
VegettoEX." We'll try to update this section every
Saturday, with at least one question straight from the fans.
Thanks!

Q.
My question is about which DVDs of DB , DBZ, and DBGT
are bilingual. I know that the first half of season 1 of DB is pure
dubbed and also the first 2 seasons of DBZ . I just
want clarification if there are other DVD's that are purely
dubbed such as specials and movies. Thanks! - Jonathan
Evangelista
A.
A good question, indeed! There's so many insane releases
out there, that it's really hard to keep track of what's
what with them. I can indeed answer the question, but keep
in mind that this is for the region one releases (which
are actually for regions 1, 2, and 4... but they only come
out, specifically, in North America). If you're in Australia,
you're in a bit of a pinch. Madman has a lot of discs that
are dub-only, and a lot of discs that are hybrid; if you're
down under, be sure to check before you buy!
For
the rest of us, however, it's pretty easy. Here we go!
DRAGONBALL:
TV "SAGA OF GOKU" BOXSET - DUB-ONLY,
EDITED
TV Episodes 1-13, movie # 1
Currently, the only releases of these episodes is of the
original syndication broadcast. This means they are dub-only
(with the Ocean Studios cast), and are censored in both
dialogue and video.
DRAGONBALL:
ANY OTHER TV EPISODES RELEASE - BILINGUAL,
UNCUT
TV Episodes 14-153
These episodes were produced after the new FUNimation in-house
dub of DB, and contain both the new dub, as well as the
uncut original Japanese track. They haven't all been released
yet, but will be, all in this format.
DRAGONBALL:
MOVIE # 3 - BILINGUAL, UNCUT
Movie # 3: "Mystical Adventure"
This
movie contains both an uncut English and Japanese track.
Be aware that some voices in the dub may be different than
in the TV series, however, since the movie was produced
before the new dubbing of the TV series began.
DRAGONBALL:
10th ANN. / MOVIE # 4 - BILINGUAL,
UNCUT / DUB-ONLY,
EDITED
10th Anniversary / Movie # 4: "The
Path to Power"
Just as the DB TV series, FUNimation has
dubbed this movie with the original Japanese soundtrack!
There is both an uncut English dub and the original Japanese
audio track contained on the uncut disc, as well as there
being a dub-only, edited disc.
DRAGONBALL
Z: TV VOLUMES 1-17 (Seasons 1 and 2) - DUB-ONLY,
EDITED
TV Episodes 1-53 (English), 1-67 (Japanese)
Currently, the only releases of these episodes is of the
original syndication broadcast. This means they are dub-only
(with the Ocean Studios cast), and are censored in both
dialogue and video. Since there are only seventeen volumes
(and not an ungodly amount like the rest of the series),
we will list them here:
Season
1 (1-25 English / 1-35 Japanese): Arrival, The Saiyans,
Snake Way, Pendulum Room, Doom, Immortals, Destruction,
Showdown
Season 2 (26-53 English / 36-67 Japanese): Departure,
Rebirth, Namek, Betrayal, Collision, Quest, Trouble, Ginyu
Force, Super Saiyan?
DRAGONBALL
Z: TV VOLUMES 18-87 (Seasons 3-7) - BILINGUAL,
UNCUT
TV Episodes 54-276 (English) / 67-291 (Japanese)
The rest of the DBZ TV series is completely uncut and bilingual.
While not every episode has been RELEASED yet (such as the
end of the Cell Games and early Great Saiyaman stuff), they
will all remain in this format.
DRAGONBALL
Z: MOVIES # 1-3 - BILINGUAL, UNCUT
Movie # 1: "Dead Zone"
Movie # 2: "The World's Strongest"
Movie # 3: "The Tree of Might"
All three of these movies were produced by FUNimation
and distributed by Pioneer Home Entertainment. They all
include both an uncut English dub (which includes the original
Japanese score!), and the original Japanese audio track.
DRAGONBALL
Z: MOVIE # 4, 6-8- BILINGUAL, UNCUT
/ DUB-ONLY,
EDITED
Movie # 4: "Lord Slug"
Movie # 6: "The Return of Cooler"
Movie # 7: "Super Android 13!"
Movie # 8: "Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan"
Movie 4 was the first movie release by FUNimation without
Pioneer's distribution. There are two versions of the DVD
available: a traditional uncut, bilingual release, as well
as an edited, dub-only release. Movies six and seven followed
suit, while the upcoming movie eight is slated for the same
type of release.
DRAGONBALL
Z: MOVIE # 5 - TRILINGUAL, UNCUT
/ DUB-ONLY, EDITED
Movie # 5: "Cooler's Revenge"
Movie 5 is, thus far, the only DBZ property released with
THREE language tracks: English, Japanese, and Spanish. Similar
to the movie 4 release, there are two versions: uncut with
all languages, and edited dub-only.
DRAGONBALL
Z: TV SPECIALS # 1-2 - BILINGUAL,
UNCUT
TV Special # 1: "Bardock: The Father of Goku"
TV Special # 2: "The Histor of Trunks"
Both of the TV specials have been released as bilingual,
uncut -only. There have been no edited releases of either
of them.
DRAGONBALL
GT: TV VOLUMES 1-? - BILINGUAL, UNCUT
TV Episodes: 17-64
Well, here's the situation. The first "episode" on FUNimation's "first
volume" is a dub-only recap of the events in the first
sixteen episodes. From there on out, every single episode
is completely bilingual, uncut. The beginning epiosdes
will EVENTUALLY make it out to this kind of release, but
only after the rest of the episodes have been released.
WHAT'S
THAT LEAVE TO BE RELEASED, EVENTUALLY, TO FILL IN THE HOLES?
Well,
there's still a few things remaining that aren't on the
above list. Let's go through that, as well.
DRAGONBALL:
MOVIE # 1 - ANTICIPATED:
BILINGUAL, UNCUT
Movie # 1: "Curse of the Blood Rubies"
This movie is a part of KidMark's edited "Legend of
Goku" boxset, which also contains TV episodes 1-13.
FUNimation will probably go back and re-release this movie
in a proper bilingual, uncut format, as well.
DRAGONBALL:
MOVIE # 2 - ANTICIPATED:
BILINGUAL, UNCUT
Movie # 2: "Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle"
They've said they plan to go back and release a DVD of it...we just don't know when.
DRAGONBALL:
TV EPs. # 1-13 RE-RELEASE - ANTICIPATED:
BILINGUAL, UNCUT
TV Episodes: 1-13
They've BEEN redubbed, and both edited and uncut dubs have
been created (edited was aired on Cartoon Network when DB
began). We're anticipating a re-release of these episodes
uncut on DVD once KidMark's sub-license on home distribution
expires (no date known).
DRAGONBALL
Z: TV EPs. # 1-67 RE-RELEASE - ANTICIPATED:
BILINGUAL, UNCUT
TV Episodes: # 1-53 (English), #1-67 (Japanese)
Many episodes' worth of material was cut out for the original
syndication broadcast, which has already been completely
released on DVD through Pioneer's home distribution sub-license.
FUNimation has already announced and confirmed plans to
re-release these episodes uncut on DVD once Pioneer's sub-license
expires (which is August 31st of this year). We'd expect
this release to be sometime in early 2004.
DRAGONBALL
Z: MOVIES # 9-13 - ANTICIPATED:
BILINGUAL, UNCUT / DUB-ONLY, EDITED
Movies # 9-13
None have been officially announced, but we're guessing
the rest of the DBZ movies will come out in the standard
format FUNimation's been following: an uncut bilingual version,
and an edited dub-only version.
DRAGONBALL
GT: TV EPISODES 1-16 - ANTICIPATED:
BILINGUAL, UNCUT
TV Episodes: 1-16
FUNimation has confirmed that once the rest of the series
has been released, the first "saga" will have
a proper, uncut release on DVD, also.
DRAGONBALL
GT: TV SPECIAL - ANTICIPATED:
BILINGUAL, UNCUT
TV Special
Since the two DBZ TV specials received only one type of
release (bilingual, uncut), it would make sense for the
one GT special to receive a similar release. Then again,
they'll probably go the route of the movies and do the uncut
& edited releases...
Phew!
That was a loooong one. All of that information will eventually
be included in our upcoming "DVD Guide" section
that I've been planning for well over a year, and it will
be laid out in a much more intuitive fashion. For now, though...that's all I can answer! I've got everyone else's questions
saved, so they might still pop up at a later time. That's
it for now! E-mail
us your questions for next week's update!
