Daizenshuu EX - Guides - Video Game Guide

It would be absolutely impossible to do an entire DragonBall video-game guide the way we would like to; there are simply too many games! From the original Shenron no Densetsu (known as Dragon Power in the US reversioning) all the way up to the latest next-next-gen console games, there's been an almost staggering number of games releases over the years.

Rather than try and do a complete list, we'll be starting up the list with the 32-bit console systems (well, Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn). DragonBall's beginnings in North America happened at this time, and it is these games & systems that the maintainers are most familiar with (not to mention own and have the most information on).

If you are looking for information, scans, screen shots, and/or anything else from older games (such as those for Super Famicom), please check out the Dragon Ball Z Video Game Archive from SuperPope. It is absolutely phenomenal, and should take care of any specific questions you have.

For now, this page will simply be a list of all games released (Japan, USA, Europe) and their respective box covers (and hopefully release dates). Whether or not this evolves into something more, such as a giant archive of more detailed information, screen shots, and/or reviews remains to be seen. While it's likely, it's not the highest priority right now!

Until then, enjoy what you see listed. Please note that the games will be listed according to system (in somewhat arbitrary order), and not necessarily by chronological release date. Please let us know if you have the actual games to scan box art from (JP and EU versions, especially... anything that's not "The Best" would be appreciated), and even any release dates we may be missing. Thanks!

TYPE: CARD-BASED BATTLE
NOTES: DragonBall debuts on the GameBoy Color in a highly customizeable RPG covering the entire DragonBall Z series, all the way from the battle with Raditz to the final showdown with Majin Buu. Featuring an extremely large cast of playable characters, the player must customize a deck of cards to suit both each characters battle style and the battle style of the opponent they will be facing. There's a huge number of cards to choose between, ranging from stat-altering cards to character-specific attack cards. The turn-based battle system pit two warriors against each other, each powering up their attacks while trying to outsmart their opponent. Also featured are team battles, which adds a new level to the one-on-one battling by adding the ability to switch characters mid-battle, in either strategic two-on-two battles, or battles between multiple weaker characters and one powerhouse.

English Title: Ultimate Battle 22
Japanese Title: Ultimate Battle 22

1995 July 28
TYPE: FIGHTING (2D)

NOTES: DragonBall's first foray into the PlayStation realm gave its character roster a big shot in the arm. 22 characters from all sagas are availible from the outset, with an additional 5 unlockable via a code. The game ditched the split-screen aspect of the Super Butôden games, and featured hand-drawn 2D characters on polygonal backgrounds.

English Title: (n/a)
Japanese Title: Idainaru Doragonbôru Densetsu

1996 May 31
TYPE: FIGHTING (2D)

NOTES: Legends (as all the cool kids call it!) gave traditional fighting games a big kick in the rear with its innovative control scheme, HUGE cast (just about every hero and villain was playable, down to the entire Ginyu-Tokusentai), and three-on-three battles. The game played from a 2.5D perspective, with 2D characters that moved around in a polygonal "fishbowl" arena. A "Momentum Bar" kept tabs on the action, and tipping it all the way in your favor let you unleash a devastating "Meteo Attack" on your opponent.

English Title: DragonBall GT: Final Bout
Japanese Title: DragonBall: Final Bout

21 August 1997

3 November 1997
(Original US Release)

31 August 2004
(US Re-Release)
TYPE: FIGHTING (3D)

NOTES: DragonBall finally ventured into full 3D. Featuring a cast of characters from both Z and GT (including the only appearances thus far of Pan and Bebi), Final Bout brought a new control scheme as well as the classic "ki tug-of-war" battles to life in polygonal glory. Many characters were unlockable via codes, including the first official American appearance of Super Saiyan 4 Goku.

Originally released in 1997 (both in Japan and America), the original American release of Final Bout has notoriously gone for hundreds of dollars in online auctions. Taking advantage of fans, Atari re-released the game to the US market in 2004.
